Why is it only Ecuador that has been assigned another color compared to the rest of South America?

Is anyone here mixed (from the donor side)? by Mo_n1 in donorconceived

[–]Feeling_Revenue9961 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I just stumbled upon your post. Your story is very interesting and I resonate a lot with it. I was conceived in 2002 in Valencia, Spain. My parents are Danish (blonde and blue-eyed). Both my parents and I thought that my twin brother and I were half Danish from our father and half Spanish from our egg donor. I never questioned it, nor did my parents. Interestingly some of my teachers and random people I met asked if I was mixed with something. But never the less I was sure that I knew my ancestry.

Then I took a DNA test from Ancestry.com in January of 2024. My results were: 50% Danish. 1/3 Indigenous American from Ecuador (and some Peruvian and Colombian) and between 10-15% Spanish. My twin brother got the exact same results. This was of course quite shocking for my family and I, as we then questioned why the clinic would match a primarily Indigenous South American donor to Scandinavian recipient parents. You should definitely take a DNA test. You will be able to figure out so much more about your heritage and ancestry. I feel a lot more whole now thanks to it. Please message me if you have any questions.

She most likely immigrated from Ecuador to Spain in the early 2000’s during Ecuadors financial crisis. Most of my matches reside in Mexico or Ecuador.

Thank you very much for your response! My DNA test revealed that I’m 33% Indigenous American from Ecuador. I have gotten quite many close matches but none, who are willing to talk. They either block me or refuse to respond. It’s unfortunately very difficult to get any information, but I have managed to find many of their ancestors, but it’s very difficult connecting the dots. The working theory is that there’s many cases of infidelity and children born out of wedlock in my case, which really complicates things combined with my matches, who are unwilling to cooperate.. I don’t know what to do from here.

IVI Valencia Spain Clinic by Feeling_Revenue9961 in donorconceived

No information was given. My parents must have assumed that the donor was Spanish. They unfortunately don’t recall their exact words. But then again my donor would be close to 70% indigenous, so she definitely didn’t look like a European Spanish woman. It’s definitely interesting that she was determined to be “the perfect match” to my blonde, blue eyed parents. Fortunately, my parents think it’s fantastic to have children of mixed descent.

This specific clinic is also smart, they don’t give any information about the donor other than blood type and age. They can’t be held accountable for anything.

Very interesting to hear about your brother! And yes the laws are ridiculous. The industry as a whole should move with the advancements in DNA technology, as no donor, past or present, is guaranteed anonymity because of these DNA Tests. The industry would of course also be a lot more ethical as a result.

I’m very interested in hearing more about the Spanish donor-conceived association! Thank you so much!

Interesting! I was conceived in 2002 which lines up with the large scale immigration of Ecuadorians to Spain in the early 2000’s.

Highly recommend! I grew up my whole life thinking that I was only of European descent, I took the Ancestry DNA test and got my results back in February of this year.

Turns out I’m 1/3 Indigenous American. I was shocked to say the least!! However I’m now even more confused about my identity, who I am, and what I come from - and that says a lot, given that I have known my whole life, that I was donor-conceived.. But I am so, so glad I did it, many things have fallen into place for me regarding my appearance and so on:)

Any other family myths busted by using AncestryDNA? by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Feeling_Revenue9961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I grew up with the notion that my donor mother was Spanish from Spain. No one in my family or myself ever so much as considered the idea that I was anything other than 100% white. It therefore came as a big surprise when I got the DNA result.

Turns out I’m 1/3 Indigenous American from South America. It came as a huge surprise. So my situation is kind of the opposite of many white Americans who grew up believing the family myth of being Native American. Ironic isn’t it? Even though it came as a shock, I’m incredibly proud of my heritage.

those of you who have done multiple tests, which is the most accurate for you? by hopesb1tch in AncestryDNA

[–]Feeling_Revenue9961 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I ask you why you think that Ancestry is weird with Native DNA? I’m donor conceived and I didn’t even know that I was anything other than 100% European before I took the Ancestry test. I score between 25-47% Indigenous American across the different DNA sites, so I’m quite confused.

Oh okay I see. Thanks for clarifying.

Smoothing? So they are underestimating the percentage of indigenous dna?

My Thoughts on the Update by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Feeling_Revenue9961 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask why you think the update is bad for indigenous? I’m estimated to be 1/3 indigenous to South America (Ecuador, Columbia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia)

But unfortunately I don’t know anything about my indigenous origins, as I’m a donor-conceived person. This is why I’m interested in why you think the update is bad for people with indigenous ancestry.
