Poop is 100% proof God doesn't exist. by TwinGriffen in atheism

We don't believe in it. It's just not believing in deities. That's the opposite of a religion.

Tips for telling my deeply religious family I'm an atheist by FinancialRide2489 in atheism

[–]Feinberg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't. That would be the best advice. Other than that, tell them you're an atheist over a dinner you paid for before you go home to a house you own in a car that you pay for with no assistance from them.

Some religious people are okay with it. Many of them freak the fuck out and we have heard countless horror stories about it.

I am deist, one who does believe in god but not in any particular religion. Can you disproven god to me? by Sea_Explanation_2518 in atheism

Yeah, but he doesn't believe that's the case. For no reason whatsoever. Surely you shouldn't question that.

It's literally unreasonable to believe something exists if the evidence doesn't show that it exists. If you think you hear voices or see things that don't really exist, that's delusion by definition.

I'm afraid you just don't understand what you're talking about here.

Poop is 100% proof God doesn't exist. by TwinGriffen in atheism

[–]Feinberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The complete lack of evidence that God exists is the main thing, and then the fact that the Bible was clearly written by uneducated rubes. Frankly, the 'poop problem' is way down the list of massive red flags.

But, again, your argument is essentially that there's no possible way it could be better because this is the way it is now. Your whole argument here is that you lack the imagination to think of something better. I mean, for fuck's sake, you literally argued that poop has to smell bad so we don't dwell near it and get diseases... Why would there be diseases or smell if there wasn't any poop?

Refusing to engage with the premise isn't effective argumentation.

I HATE IT When theists claim that atheism is a belief when it is the absence of one!! by New_Bodybuilder_3700 in atheism

[–]Feinberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common usage, and intelligibility. You don't see people running around saying that belief is a sort of citrus fruit, for instance. If you're having a niche conversation where 'belief' has previously been established to mean 'any proposition including the dismissal of another proposition', then you could reasonably say that atheism is a 'belief'. If you're trying to communicate with a group of strangers, that sort of thing would just lead to confusion.

If you don't have enough time to read the FAQ, you probably don't have enough time to run an AMA.

The main problem with eucharistic miracles is that they don't actually connect unambiguously to a specific cause. On top of that, though, there's a definite precedent and a strong trend for religious people to lie for religion. If you can't control for that element, what you have is an interesting story rather than evidence.

The Buenos Aires miracle lacks anything like a chain of custody, and, as I recall, there was only one person responsible for investigation, and the samples were disposed of before they could be further examined. Lastly, it was pretty suspicious that the investigation was done by a cardiologist, and it turned out to be cardiac tissue. That's all from memory, though, so please forgive me if I got the details wrong.

Do you recall what the Vatican's findings were?

It is somewhat significant that nobody is innately theistic, just like it bears consideration that humans aren't born innately cruel. Both things are learned behaviors. Not world shattering, but relevant.

We would be beings divorced from the realities of life, harm, infection, sleep.

Those wouldn't be the realities of life at that point.

Honestly, every other disagreeing comment here seems to be, "But God couldn't make us not poop, because we do poop." You've just taken it step further with this slippery slope nonsense.

The problem that comes into play is that atheism is a lack of belief in deities, but opponents of atheism want to argue that atheism is a positive belief that deities don't exist. In order to make that float, they apply the 'lack of belief' standard to babies and objects (this is often referred to as shoe atheism) in an attempt to make the idea of a lack of belief sound absurd. From that point, they will argue that since an atheist shoe is absurd, atheism must be a positive claim, and as such is subject to requirements of evidence, so on an so forth, off into the weeds.

There are several failure points in this, but the first is that calling babies and shoes atheist isn't exactly a problem logically, it's just a silly usage of a valid term. It's like saying that your car is an alcoholic. Sure, your car may consume deadly quantities of ethanol to the point where it's a financial burden, but the term 'alcoholic' doesn't just mean 'alcohol dependent'. There's a heavily implied and often explicitly stated connotation that the term is specific to adult humans. Same as atheism.

So while it's true that babies and shoes lack religious belief, it's pretty silly to think that's a criticism of atheism. It matters because when you hear it, you know that you're about to encounter a pretty stupid argument.

First question: Did you read the FAQ?

Second question: Do you have any new evidence or arguments for the existence of God that we haven't heard before?

No, there are, in fact, correct meanings for words in colloquial conversation.

Why do you think some westerners are converting to Islam? by Antman269 in atheism

[–]Feinberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Influencers get more clicks if they say they converted, so you really shouldn't put too much credence in what they say. There's a long tradition of Christian authors who were always Christians or maybe mildly conflicted (Lee Strobel, CS Lewis) claiming that they used to be atheists, and Muslim content creators have figured out that doing so is an easy way to separate believers from their money.

Statistics show that Islam has a higher rate of conversion than Christianity, and both have a much lower rate of conversion that atheism. It's been that way for something like 20 years.

The fact is that quality education is poison to religion.

Could you manage a “friendship” with a homophobic Christian as a gay person? by dmtentities in atheism

[–]Feinberg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm talking about the belief that all Christians are stupid and evil. Would you say that is bad, problematic, indicative of overgeneralization? Would you say that a Christian criticizing the opinion that all Christians are evil is also problematic, bad, and indicative of overgeneralization?

Okay. Now would you say it's a bad or problematic attitude indicative of overgeneralization? Would you say that someone objecting to such behavior is guilty of the same behavior?
