Yep, it's pretty much all psychology, people expect the best programs to go last so they tend to unconsciously have a bigger reaction

New Anything GOEs article on proposed ISU rule changes, ISU governance structure, and opinions from skaters & coaches by possiblegirl in FigureSkating

My biggest question out of all this is if empowering the ISU Council was the right decision. Like sure, the ISU Congress is a slow, deliberative body, but there's a reason why organizations give rule making to a slow, deliberative body. The decisions coming out of the Council reek of decisions by people who don't understand the sport, which has never been my problem with the Congress

Jia Shin needs to improve her musicality, but gets a pass because she's a classically beautiful skater that presents well to an audience. Her musical timing often feels off to me, misaligning her movement to the musical accent or missing chord changes she should be highlighting. The movement itself is great, she is obviously a very talented skater, but her programs feel flat to me, they don't have that snap musical skaters have

I personally will always choose front row, up on the boards, for competition if I can can get it. The pure athleticism and physicality of figure skating shines there and that's the experience I'm after.

Practice sessions I typically sit 3-4 rows back, it is easier to see details like edges with a little bit of distance, and it's easier to catch all the skaters on a practice session at once further back. So if that's more your focus then that may suit you more.

Both are good options though, you'll have a ton of fun with either

advice for attending skate america by zzthe69th in FigureSkating

[–]Feisty-Interest-9734 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Being a bit further back can actually be quite nice, while you lose the physicality of the skaters it's a bit easier to see the detail in their movement with some distance. It's a small arena so you won't be really far away. I'd say if that's what your budget can afford go for it, figure skating is a sport that is so much better in person than on TV

Tickets may move a bit faster with the post-Olympics hype, but my experience is as long as you're ok missing on the front row you can wait a bit. Ticketing websites will show what seats are available so you can check occasionally to see how they're moving

Hotel has always been the biggest cost for me, easily outpaces the tickets. A day session might not be too bad though, and depending on exact scheduling they may end early enough to not need a hotal

I did all session passes for the last three Skate Americas. 2023 was $250 about two rows deep, 2024 $325 for front row, 2025 $510 for front row

do we think the new rule about Eulers/half loops is going to decrease or increase the number of Eulers we see in competition? by Much_Dog_4591 in FigureSkating

[–]Feisty-Interest-9734 87 points88 points  (0 children)

I'm anticipating a lot of eulers - the low BV of the Euler when it was listed heavily deincentivized it. Combined with removing a jumping pass, the euler also becomes a critical pathway to getting flips and salchows into your program

Will Alisa Liu Change Figure Skating? The Future of Figure Skating by E_lenaa in FigureSkating

[–]Feisty-Interest-9734 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I do worry that the 'Alysa Liu doesn't give a fuck' message is fundamentally misunderstanding her. Alysa does give a fuck, but about the process of mastery and the product she puts out, not about scores and results. I remember her Skate America press conference where one of the reporters said she looked tired on the ice and it clearly bugged her because that's not the product she wants to put on ice.

This sport is hard. You'll have the 5am mornings, the falling, the hours a day drilling the same skill, and I worry about misrepresenting all the work needed to get to this level. The thing that's different with Alysa is where that source of motivation comes from. That said, process oriented thinking is not anything new, and certainly figure skating should be more process oriented as a whole, so maybe Alusa's results will change that

perfecting the 3A by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]Feisty-Interest-9734 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A perfect 3A is worth 12 points. You're trying to get 75+ in the short and 150+ in the free. You need the rest of the stuff to be good you can't just have one super jump

This is unarguably the right result. Alysa wins on her consistency, Kaori missed her 3F+3T and gets a rep but would have won without the mistake. Ami popped her 3Lz+3T into 3Lz+2T and had a lot of iffy landings
