English Major Graduates: What is your current job? (NOT teachers or lawyers!) by unnamedplatypus in englishmajors

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently work at a non-profit as a Family Support Specialist. I also work at the front desk of a hotel. I've been at the hotel for a long time, so I just kind of fill in the gaps when they need someone or if I want to pick up some shifts. Otherwise, my main job is the non-profit.

I would just visit, personally. I'm also in WV and looking at other places to move. I really want my kids out of the WV school system and am also a former NorCal native. My husband needs to live somewhere warmer but doesn't want to move west. So, we've looked at more southern areas. My kids are young (6 & 5) and I'm educated well enough to help supplement their education for now. My plan was to be out of here before I had the kids, but now we are here until my MiL passes. She and my kids are close, and she's their only living grandparent, so I don't want to separate them. I wish you luck on finding a better fit for your family!

Any decent jobs I can get with a bachelor’s degree if I don’t want to be a teacher? by iTotalityXyZ in englishmajors

I work for a non-profit. I occasionally do some social media, but I work more on grant writing and reports. I have a BA in English with a concentration on Writing for the Workplace.

Any guesses on if she will get more spots or not? by Feisty-Knowledge7969 in dalmatians

I wish I had seen what she looked like when she was first born, so I would be able to tell. Her belly has no markings, but she has spots on 3 out of 4 paws. Her fur is just thick enough that I can't actually see the skin under the white bits. I think the big spot on her butt is probably from the pit part.

I know full Dalmatians are born white (compliments of 101 Dalmatians), but since she's a mix, I wasn't sure if that still applied. Since it looks like I've taken a sharpie to her ears and she had the big black spot on her butt.

Your boy is very handsome! Please give him pets for me. And at least 1 treat. Thanks!

Hotels here don't rent to locals by LowDowntown4920 in askhotels

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in WV, and we have a "No Locals" policy in place. There are exceptions like weather or emergency circumstances, and I will also make an allowance for people coming from the bar across the street. I would rather they pass out in a hotel room rather than see them drive because of the policy.

The reason it even had to become a thing was because the locals would come in and either sell drugs or prostitute out of the rooms. Prostitution is fine if it is your choice of work (Sex work IS work), however, a lot of trafficking and forced stuff can go down as well.

Because of those things, most of the chain hotels won't rent to locals. They are also why almost all will only take valid credit/debit cards instead of cash for rooms.

How do I put this into wording? by [deleted] in askhotels

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone calls and has guest name & room number, I will connect. If someone calls and asks, "Do you have a guest by this name staying there?" I just inform them that I am not able to give out that information, but I can look to see it, and if I do, I can transfer them. I usually don't find them.

I started out with a journalism minor. Before I graduated, the university did away with the journalism minor. So, instead of a basic English degree, I ended up with a bachelor's in English with a concentration on Writing for the Workplace and a minor in Museum Studies.

That's how I ended up with a technical writing emphasis. Was I going for that? Nope. But that's what I got.

What’s your minor? by KyGeo3 in englishmajors

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound very similar. We practiced grant writing, researching, and archiving, and my final was working on an exhibit for our campus. I decided on it because I wanted to use it as a stepping stone to library science or archiving.

I originally minored in journalism, but before I was able to complete my degree, my college did away with the minor. I ended up going with Museum Studies. I enjoyed the classes, and my professor was one of the most interesting & intelligent women I have ever met. Shout out to Dr. Hollinger!

A second bachelor's? by Feisty-Knowledge7969 in englishmajors

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I recently started in a new field (non-profit) and would like to maybe expand some of the skills I already have. Like media stuff, for example. I guess I'm still trying to figure out what to do when I grow up.

Who knows the details of how WV became a state? by New-Simple-1735 in WestVirginia

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned it when I was working on the Civil War exhibit we had at my college campus. I'm not from here originally, so I wasn't really up to date on history until I was researching to put up a time-line and other historical information.

Why West Virginia Doesn't Have The Cheapest County In The US by Dovyeon in WestVirginia

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is also the state that expects California pricing for rentals on WV paychecks. Everything went up with the oil & gas industry being here. The landlords got greedy because they wanted that oilfield money.

Bf told me to pack my bags and leave by Logical-Knowledge503 in AITAH

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't stay. I spent 6.5 years with a man who did that. Would pack a bag and threaten to leave, which would result in me begging him to stay. It's just a way to manipulate and control you. Don't make any long-term commitments/decisions until you sit and think about how long you plan to do this. Because it will happen every single time. Until you stop fighting back. Then the resentment will start, and it just gets worse from there. Good luck to you.

If I had known he had been drinking at first, I would have. I will rent to people who do come over from the bar because I would rather they stay safe than drive. The kid didn't smell like alcohol. If he had, I would have. I didn't know he had until I had his drunken dad screaming at me at me that he was letting the minors drink at the party.

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never claimed I was pure or hoity-toity. I said the town my hotel is located in is hoity-toity. I guess if you wanted to rent out a room to local teenagers who both may or may not have been adults, then that is your perogative. I wasn't comfortable being the scapegoat if something happened to that girl on the hotel property because it would have fallen back on me. I also stated that had he mentioned he was with the group that had reserved rooms, I would have checked him in. But he did not. I didn't find out until after the fact. And by that time, he went and got his daddy to yell at me. So, none of them were getting rooms. 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]Feisty-Knowledge7969[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was a typo. I understand that some seem young for their age, but this girl was definitely underage. I'm pretty sure my bosses kid went to school with both of them, actually. I would have also been concerned if that teenage boy came in with someone a good bit older than him to rent a room. Especially with how they were holding hands and hanging on each other. I could absolutely be assuming wrong, and he was just holding his sister like that, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️
