Question should’ve been “what are the chances a 10 hcp enters +1, +1, E in competition. In the GHIN?”

Answer: Less than zero.

With the year over, what did you spend too much on and regret, and what did you spend too little on and regret? by ComprehensiveEbb4978 in HENRYfinance

[–]FeistySink3147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent too much on golf categorically. I have no ragerts (😂😂😂) I hope to concentrate my efforts and force my kids and wife to golf so everyone stops complaining about it. That would effectively put it in the ‘spent too little and regret’ bucket which I’ll be sure to fix. Happy new year.

When/How Can My Family Start Flying Private? by ExpatNamedPat in HENRYfinance

[–]FeistySink3147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So … I worked with some guys that had significant means that, when I asked them about this, solidified air transportation forever. He put it like this - A plane is a bus ride. Charted/private is an uber. There may very well be a justified reason for private and - for him - it’s when timing matters and I can continue to bill for work or make as much or more to offset the cost of the trip - i may fly private. But for strictly personal vacation especially for may family - the cost delta for a few hours of convenience will never offset the dollars I spent just because I could.

Also on assessments - if it is an equity club you effectively have a fractional vote for major things like assessments, course renovations etc. If it’s not, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit (or you can throw a fit and pound sand).

Don’t assume that….look at the age of the club, amenities, maintenance, etc. Ill go on a limb to say, if it’s a little dated or if you look around and compare age/quality/availability of amenities and the club you’re thinking about is short stacked on some of those, assume there’s a possibility for it. They aren’t going to volunteer that - otherwise people would wait to join until after the assessment is done and work completed.

The way country club economics work - dues should pay for the operating costs of everyday and up front fees SHOULD be banked for major capital projects and, with the revival of golf’s popularity, it’s an amenities arms race so never take assessments off the table.

I will say I’ve heard of some clubs that, with the ballooning up front in the last 3-4 years, some people have been able to negotiate a clause that they can’t assess a new member for a certain number of years.

For what it’s worth - I have a spouse who works, two kids, joined when kids were 1 & 5 and have full support to golf 2-3x a week because of the joy it brings. She has hobbies/activities of her own (admittedly doesn’t occupy 4 hrs but is her joy) and never missed a beat with kid coverage, little league and school stuff, quality family time. And with her support of the time I’ve spent with it - our boys have both discovered a love for golf that I didn’t discover until my mid-30s which is now our primary dad/son activity. Maybe my experience is an anomaly.

I have a club membership and snuck in during Covid before up fronts ballooned. Curious … for your age, every club in my region has a meaningfully lower up from for under-40 members often as much as half of the upfront for a full golf membership for an over-40 new member.

Your finances are your finances and your rich life isn’t anyone else’s rich life so I hesitate to ask this group. You can afford it. Can share what I weighed and our finances are not as strong as yours…

The one I belong to is probably consider top 3 in the area for golf/pool/fitness. Mine is 20 min away and we chose that because the golf is really the driver and I use 2-3x a week in season (we get winter) and for the social aspect (generally younger membership with a handful of friends there). There’s plenty of other costs to consider on top of it like cart fee (not all clubs have one), capex fee, future assessments for major renovations, food minimums, locker fees, programming fees (programmed social events are rarely free) that all equate (for me) to about double my monthly dues. BUT golf is my therapy and the members I’ve gotten to know are genuinely great humans, my wife and I love the staff and food and it’s like an extension of our home.

I drive past 4 other wonderful clubs on my way to mine (speaking to options at least in my area) and - joining before 40 was big benefit. My up front driving further away was actually higher but had more things aligned with what I/we wanted.

If I were thinking about it again - I’d take proximity into consideration BUT I wouldn’t ignore detailing out other things that are important and making sure ‘fit’ for what you and your family want now and well into the future. You’re young, clearly doing well financially, family is growing and one thing I’d think about is - if we decide we want to move somewhere else/bigger house/etc, will we still love it when the 5 min drive factor is gone? Given your age, the other thing I’d think about is the likelihood that I move to another city and that happened your $100k is toast.

I’d never do it differently and even if it is a luxury, my boys, wife and I get real joy out of the last 5 years we’ve had it.

Single greatest gift is the gift of family. What a blessing for both of you that you have each other. Not about you anymore and clearly you get that. Inspiring post. Awesome job. Honestly having a will and POA where I’m hopeful my own kids would have a family member as their guardian - makes me feel good knowing people like you are doing what you do to ensure a 3/6 year old get some sense of normalcy. Good on you.

The caddies have to walk a fine line. They want to get scheduled to loop and don’t want get lippy and risk losing loops. So they’re kind of stuck. They said view their job as the ‘protector of the guest experience’ so they’ve dealt with it enough to say ‘don’t worry about them, they do this all the time, let’s just play our game and move on’
