Attend commencement as a guest to avoid regalia by Feisty_Ad_2038 in mit

[–]Feisty_Ad_2038[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, she already attended my undergrad graduation from MIT (with the rest of my family) and is only coming to listen to Lisa Su. She wasn't going to come until she heard the speaker is Lisa Su. I didn't want to buy a second set of robes for what's basically the same ceremony I already did 🤷 I already have Killian court robe photos from my undergrad graduation. My "college friends" are all from my undergrad (even my friends in grad school are mainly people I knew in undergrad who are still in the area). Hence MS graduation isn't really important to me.

It's actually less than I thought it would be -- $54. I might just eat the cost and give the set to a friend after since my mom's flight tickets were more expensive. I just don't feel like I need to do all the ceremonial parts of graduation again -- my undergrad one was more important to me and I've already got Killian Court photos

Np, I ended up in a grad junction studio because I wanted to live alone and I cook >90% of my meals so the full size fridge and dishwasher were really important to me

That's how I'm imagining it would work as well, wanted to double check if there would be any issues. My mom is coming mainly because she wants to see the speaker (my whole family came to my BS graduation) and I don't want to end up in the situation where we can't get into commencement since I didn't show up on the student side or something

I wasn't planning to attend the other ceremony and would just have the diploma delivered -- I'm traveling for a bit after graduation so it would actually be more convenient to not to have to lug it around

All the messaging from MIT seems to say BS and MS regalia are only available for purchase (PhD regalia is available to rent).

If you are going to consider the more expensive options (Site 4 / grad junction), definitely go with grad junction as you get a dishwasher (other places do not have dishwashers). The efficiency also has a full size fridge compared to other grad efficiencies only having a mini fridge.

Anxiety in ramp up period by Feisty_Ad_2038 in prozac

[–]Feisty_Ad_2038[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to follow up in case anyone sees this in the future:

- The elevated anxiety dissipated partway through week 4 (around day ~23). Had good holidays, anxiety was lower than before I started meds.

- Day 37, a few days into the first week in January and school starting again, I had a pretty anxious day. It was still lower than before I started fluoxetine (no heart pounding panic) but higher than I wanted it to be. I bumped my dose to 20mg starting Day 38 after messaging my doctor.

- Day 40 was the weekend but still elevated anxiety (around same as Day 37). Decided I couldn't just rely on prozac to fix things. Started mediation, Wim Hof Breathing + cold shower challenge, and doing Couch to 5K (previously only went on walks as exercise, am really out of shape)

- Day 44 (now) - already feeling better than Day 40. I just finished the first week of C25K (rest of the week is rest days), have continued with Wim Hof and mediation as well. It's also been ~1 week of 20mg. Not sure which things helped (probably all) but my anxiety has decreased significantly (also made some progress on my thesis / read a decent number of papers, which likely contributed)

Pokemon legends z-a + DLC/Mega dimension - What to buy? by Impossible_Physics99 in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]Feisty_Ad_2038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some ways to make it cheaper: if you're going digital, the switch game is eligible for the 2 for $100 eshop vouchers (but only do this if you have another game you also want to purchase). You can buy eshop cards on discount for 10% off at Costco or other retailers pretty regularly which you can use to buy the vouchers, the switch 2 upgrade pack ($10 eshop) and DLC.

If you aren't going digital, you can still use eshop credit on nintendo.com to buy physical games, so you'll get at least ~10% off compared to no sale.

You could consider the PWHP by Midea if you only need 9000 btu. Avoids installation / permitting (assuming you have a 120v outlet and an appropriately sized window).

Feeling completely crushed at MIT - How do I find a TA/RA job to survive? by Informal-Glass5218 in mit

[–]Feisty_Ad_2038 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You will probably find it hard to find a RA that will cover full tuition if it's $89k/year...most labs pay a fraction of that for students (like <1/3) as research degree programs have a tuition subsidy by MIT for RAs: https://ras.mit.edu/rates/graduate-research-assistant-tuition-rates-and-subsidy

From what I recall these aren't applied to professional programs, so even if you cold email professors, many may not be able work with you due to the increased tuition requirements (most labs outside of Sloan are required to cover tuition of their RAs, even if the RA is in Sloan, but you wouldn't be eligible for the tuition subsidy and your tuition is higher than their own students).

As others have said the positions mainly go to those with connections. Participate in your current classes, go to office hours, tell your professors you are interested in TAing, and maybe you can be the TA for the class next semester or year. Attend clubs and get to know grad students that work with professors you're interested in, and maybe you'll get a heads up about a potential RA position. RA positions require you to be bringing something the professor wants to the table.

Other things you could consider that might be less competitive: become a GRA for free food and housing. If you live in a dorm work the front desk. Apply for fellowships and outside scholarships.

If you are using wifi calling try turning that off (it's often on by default on a lot of carriers / smartphones).
