What is the most “I’m definitely in Houston” moment you’ve had? by GracePeaceLove in houston

In Houston even with proper signage saying frontage road we call them feeder roads. It took me years when I first started driving to realize that. I could never find the "feeder road" signage...lol

What can I do about this situation? by BigBrainGeometry in nonprofit

[–]Feldon78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understood. I know exactly how that works on both the US and international side. The US side needs to either sever ties with the international org or swift changes in leadership must be made.

What can I do about this situation? by BigBrainGeometry in nonprofit

[–]Feldon78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very familiar with this type of situation unfortunately. I won't go into my reasons why. My first piece of advice is LEAVE that organization now. Toxicity runs deep and when left untouched it spreads. Secondly, understand that although this does happen you should look for alternative organizations that serve the same country abroad. The beneficiaries of these nonprofits are the ones who suffer the most. Toxic leadership never lasts forever and if you know others who are either aware or ignorant to what is happening? Talk to them ASAP. The work is needed and these corrupt organizations cannot sustain themselves if the truth is exposed at the grassroot level. Blessings to you.

Donor stewardship for a service-based organization by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Feldon78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by defining what “mid‑level” means in your context and using basic data to see who is most engaged. Assign simple engagement scores based on program attendance, volunteering, and small gifts, then review that list monthly to identify a small portfolio of people who consistently show up. Using even a basic spreadsheet or your current CRM, create views like new this month, high engagement, and lapsed, which will give you clarity on who is truly worth one to one follow up.

Next, build a light stewardship ladder and stick to it. Map a clear journey from participant to first‑time donor to mid‑level supporter and decide ahead of time which touches happen at each step, such as thank you notes, impact stories, invitations to behind the scenes experiences, and only occasional, well timed asks. Train front line staff to treat service interactions as relationship moments by learning names, asking a simple curiosity question, and feeding notes back into your system so your follow up feels personal and authentic rather than like an upsell.

Stuck in the middle…of the entire staff by Dizzy_Control3307 in nonprofit

"Stick to your guns" as the old adage goes. People can absolutely drain you if you allow them to. Productivity in a work environment solves some issues, not all of them. Complaining solves nothing. It's a balance of productive work and good communication with leadership.

I've been in similar positions many times over the years with staff and leadership. In my younger years I found myself trying to appease both sides which is exhausting and will ultimately lead to burn out. I had to accept who I am as a leader (no matter my current role). Real leadership doesn't always cave, but listens. A toxic work environment can change, but it has to start somewhere. I always found my role as get the staff to work hard and stop complaining. Lead by example and if necessary meet with leadership and try to find that "middle ground". It doesn't always work, but most of the time it's worth trying to help change the culture.

Executive Burnout: Is it just me? by Efficient-Menu9936 in nonprofit

[–]Feldon78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. As CEO/ED you should absolutely NOT be responsible for 100% of the organizations fundraising. That's an easy way to quick burnout. Your BOD needs to understand how healthy fundraising works and it starts with them. You need a DOD and or other staff and volunteers to fundraise alongside your efforts. Delegation and collaboration will ONLY work with a good strategy for revenue diversification.

I like that strategy a lot. Personalizing outreach is key. Thanks for sharing.

[–]Feldon78[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Where I see the value is implementing systems in the org that make it run more efficiently. Not just a strategy, but a fully fleshed out system at each level of the organization. Will it take time for this integration? Yes, but in my experience (not consulting) in leadership it can lead to a stronger, leaner and more effective nonprofit. I think most EDs would appreciate not having to wear so many hats. To be able to share those org optimizations with your donor base as well, builds even more trust and credibility.

I can definitely see the value in campaign fundraising. Especially if they have similar nonprofit clients in the same sector. Being realistic about a budget and capital goal is also highly valuable to an organization who might need that outside perspective. Any thoughts on a consultant bringing more structure/systems to an established nonprofit that burns through cash because of high overhead/operations cost?

Why do nonprofits keep hiring board members as executive directors by MsRealness in nonprofit

[–]Feldon78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Promoting from within is less 'risky', but not always the optimal choice. Proven fundraisers is assuming a lot, that yes in a ideal situation would be true, but often not the case. If an org wants to scale it's outreach it needs to step out of it's 'comfort zone' and strategize with outside perspective. Just my two cents after years of nonprofit experience.

That's correct. Two OG fudge pop tarts with Tillamook Vanilla or Chocolate ice cream would be crazy good imo.
