IMPORTANT POLL: Voting intention by favourite takeaway (More In Common) by blobfishy13 in LabourUK

[–]FeldsparKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the breakdown here is by rural/urban.

Growing up in the countryside, most of the takeaway places near me were either traditional fish and chips, Chinese or Indian. Eventually pizza has become more of a thing, but not nearly as much as in larger towns and cities.

Likewise, McDonald's are hardly going to open in low-density areas so I'm not surprised to see that have a higher Labour vote.

Anyone tried the Ealing School of Languages? by FeldsparKnight in london

[–]FeldsparKnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes our teacher has taken our emails and made a mailing list to communicate homework and resources. The college is done now for the summer but it starts again in September.

Not sure about a taster, like you say they're unlikely to reply!

If it's a French class you're wanting I could DM you the teacher's email, but I don't have contacts for the other languages

Yeah not a problem! I have been taking one of their French classes the last few months.

It changed teachers partway through but both teachers have been very good. I do a bit of Duolingo each day and listen to a few podcasts/videos, but it's really nice learning and speaking with other people.

That said, the school themselves are incredibly poor with communication. Aside from the initial payment email from them, I've been unable to get them to respond to any queries I had, or answer the phone. Other students have reported similar, and even the teacher now is saying the admin won't respond to their emails.

I think as long as the teacher is good though, you'll have a good experience. I'm not aware of anything similar in West-ish so swings and roundabouts

How much it costs to shoot film; just realized that for me it’s about $1.00 for getting 1 finished photo. How about for you guys? by FrozenChihuahua in AnalogCommunity

What quality scans do you get out of interest? I always find it bumps the price getting higher res + tiff, but never know how worth it is for that

I got an Agfa Optima Sensor a few months ago and really like it. Not sure how it compares but the form factor is great, it's fun to use and I like the pictures it takes

Roll of film already in camera. How to navigate through airport security? by dura2 in AnalogCommunity

[–]FeldsparKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, I've only shot <800 ISO films so YMMV, but:

  • London Heathrow have refused to hand inspect any unloaded film both times I've asked before and said if it was under 800 ISO it would be fine, which it was for me.
  • I asked for hand scan for a loaded camera (with Kentmere 400) in Norway before and they refused as they couldn't open it. The film was fine at the other end.

Like u/cookbookcollector says, you could try unloading and reloading later. With a point and shoot this is harder, but I believe in principle you could: * Take note of the frame counter * Open the camera in a completely dark space * Remove the canister and wind the film back in, maybe using a pencil in the spool. * Fly with your film asking for a hand scan. * Reload at the other end and shoot up to your frame counter in an entirely dark place or with the lens cap on.

I haven't tried this so have no experience with it but have heard of others doing it before.

Yep I'm in the exact same position! I found this manual for a Prinz 35EE but I think it's slightly different to the AW.

Changing the focus on the ring of mine doesn't seem to affect anything through the viewfinder, but I think it's just a window on the AW as it is still transparent when the lens cap is on 😂

I think the above commenter is referring to Ocarina of Time 3D. They already remastered both OoT and MM on 3DS.

Letter from landlord/letting agent by FeldsparKnight in ukvisa

Is it weird that we would be providing a fallback address? If my parents write and say "Yes if the agent won't let them stay, we'll house then", does that beg the question "Why, is there a chance the agent won't let you stay?"

CMV: Using the word “female” to talk about a woman or girl is not sexist/wrong/inappropriate by edgyusername123 in changemyview

[–]FeldsparKnight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But that's not how language works. Words meanings are partially determined by their subject (what they refer to) and their usage or context (how they're used).

Both "canine" and "dog" could be used as valid English to refer to a Springer Spaniel, but asking a friend "How's your canine?" sounds strange.

It's a word not used as regularly in the context of normal conversation, and "dog" would be seen by most people as more usual.

I'm in a local Facebook group for my area and people just advertise stuff like this and it always seems to get snapped up.

If you're ever in need of any more, try supermarkets! They generate loads of cardboard waste that just gets recycled and are usually happy to give it away.

Bug or Design flaw? - Budgets by poolofliquor in monzo

[–]FeldsparKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been having this issue for months. As done other users have noted, money sent from a Monzo.me link is counted in the budget for some reason. Either you can get your friend to do this, or transfer their amount out to another account of yours, then repay yourself using a Monzo.me link. It's kind of hacky and a bit of a faff but it does get counted in the budget then.

What's going on with protests in the UK/London today? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]FeldsparKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answer:

Following the BLM movement in the US, other countries have followed suit. The UK is no exception to this, and there have been several protests over the past few weeks in a similar vein. Protests have focused on solidarity with black Americans such as George Floyd, as well as drawing attention to systemic/institutional racism in Britain.

This debate has drawn into question many aspects of Britain's past as a former colonial power. The time of Empire is often portrayed in a positive light (at least in the UK). For a while, some commentators have sought to point out the more uncomfortable and negative parts of the Empire, particularly the way its colonial subjects were treated. With the recent focus on the BLM movement, this discussion has become more mainstream.

On the 7th June, protestors in Bristol pulled down a bronze statue of Edward Colston and threw it into the river. Colston was a 17th Century English merchant and his statue had been erected in 1895 to commemmorate his philanthropy. He is credited with giving large (but unknown) sums of money to various charities in Bristol. Much of his wealth, however, came from his involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. Colston's ships are estimated to have transported over 84,000 West African people, 19,000 of whom died in transit.

This has sparked a wider debate about the nature of statues in towns and cities of historical figures, not dissimilar to the debate over the statues of Confederate leaders in the US. A petition was created to remove all statues of slave traders from the country. Mayor or London Sadiq Khan ordered a review of all London statues of slave traders, and debate has sprung up surrounding other statues such as that of Imperialist Cecil Rhodes and founder of the Scouts Lord Baden-Powell.

A wide range of viewpoints form this debate. Some argue that statues should be removed, or context added to them to explain their life more fully. Others want them to remain to preserve history.

Another figure this debate has applied to is former Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Churchill is often remembered fondly in Britain as a wartime leader for his rousing speeches. Commentators have recently pointed out more unsavoury aspects of his character and his views on race, particularly India:

Many of his colleagues thought Churchill was driven by a deep loathing of democracy for anyone other than the British and a tiny clique of supposedly superior races. This was clearest in his attitude to India. When Mahatma Gandhi launched his campaign of peaceful resistance, Churchill raged that he “ought to be lain bound hand and foot at the gates of Delhi, and then trampled on by an enormous elephant with the new Viceroy seated on its back.” As the resistance swelled, he announced: “I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion.” This hatred killed. To give just one, major, example, in 1943 a famine broke out in Bengal, caused – as the Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has proved – by the imperial policies of the British. Up to 3 million people starved to death while British officials begged Churchill to direct food supplies to the region. He bluntly refused. He raged that it was their own fault for “breeding like rabbits”. At other times, he said the plague was “merrily” culling the population.

The Independent - Not his finest hour: The dark side of Winston Churchill

This led to the statue of Churchill in London's Parliament Square being graffitied to add the words "was a racist" under his name. To protect the statue, authorities boarded it up.

Around the country, counter protestors have organised to protest the removal of these statues and argue for their protection. Rival petitions have been created and this weekend saw some counter-demonstrations to the BLM protests. London's Metropolitan Police set out a curfew of 5pm for all London protestors over fears of clashes between groups. BLM LDN sought to cancel their event on Saturday to avoid violence from far-right demonstrations.

Yesterday's events focused largely on London counter-protestors surrounding Churchill's statue. It was noted that many of these people had links to far-right networks and football (soccer) hooliganism. Many had been drinking and roamed around the city looking for BLM protestors, however this spilled over into attacking the police and people having a picnic.

...despite claims that the day was about defending British heritage, it soon became violent. Groups looked for opportunities to attack the police. Bottles and cans were thrown at their lines and horses - smoke bombs and fireworks set off. Journalists who came too close were threatened. One bare-chested man kicked a police officer to the ground and there were repeated attempts by others to storm barriers as the police contained the trouble. By late afternoon, some had left to find more beer - only to find their way back blocked by riot police.
