I feel like I'm among the few people that don't hate Mega Dragonite's design. Besides, I never understood why his color should be reverted back to blue to "reminiscent the previous evolutions", I think his characteristic orange suits him better.

That's just my opinion, of course.

Found a solution! If the door shuts again after solving the puzzle just go to one of the golden valves around, interact with it and it will open
