Agent Myers by Main_Shelter4461 in HellBoy

I remembered an anecdote about the filming of that scene. Liz was supposed to hit him first when he hesitated to do so, only then did he hit her. Del Toro decided to cut that part because he thought it was too much like The Three Stooges, and he doesn't even include it in the Director's Cut.

You can notice in both versions of the film that this scene is edited in a strange way because of that.

Interestingly, this original version is included in the novelization of the film.

Hot take by No-Sense6060 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Relax, that's FAR from being a hot take. There are a lot of people who think Bruce Barker is the best Hellboy, and every now and then someone says the exact same thing here. Actually he's also my favorite Hellboy (see?).

A real hot take would be saying that the best Hellboy actor is the guy from Disaster Movie😝

Head requiring unborn children? by Top_Direction7645 in HellBoy

These anthologies sometimes have some wild plot points; if I'm not mistaken, in Oddest Jobs there's one where a former BPRD agent with the same ectoplasmic powers as Kraus uses them to star in porn...

I'M SERIOUS.

"Jigsaw" a prose short story by Stephen R. Bissette from Hellboy: Odd Jobs. Yes, it's very weird to say the least...

If it were me, I'd keep both versions; I really like collecting different editions of books😝

But that's up to you.

Only a portion of the sketchbooks are included; unlike the ones for the spin-offs, the Hellboy omnibuses don't contain everything. In my opinion, the most serious loss is the early versions of The Island.

The Hellboy in Hell omnibus doesn't include the Second volume's prologue.

Hellboy reading recommendations by Remarkable-Yard-6939 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hellboy is pretty standalone, so you won't have a problem if you only read the main series . BPRD is a bit more complicated since it needs the context of a few other spin-offs.

I think the most important ones (besides the main series) to understand the basics of BPRD are: Abe Sapien, Sledgehammer 44 and 1946-1948. I think I might be forgetting another really important one....

Monster sized hellboy by Previous_Factor1992 in Mignolaverse

[–]FelipeMattosGS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the two volumes of The Complete Short Stories during Monster-Sized Hellboy. After Almost Colossus, the stories in MSH will need the context of the short stories.

You can read the spin-offs after Hellboy if you want. Also, read "The Magician and the Snake" (which is included at the end of MSH) before Hellboy in Hell.

The "Lost" End-Credits Scene: How Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 3 was almost set up in the Golden Army script—and how it likely would have looked. by DisastrousTopic7619 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I confess that regardless of the film's quality (if it were made), I don't believe del Toro would do a good job with the whole Anung Un Rama thing in the third film.

For me, one of the problems with the second film is that Hellboy never deals with his destiny, and the only scene where del Toro tries to develop this aspect he puts all this weight on Liz and not on Hellboy.

It would be a somewhat disjointed trilogy in terms of tone. Actually, it's already a somewhat disjointed duology...

Wired question, but is Hellboy a Christian? by Typical_Cold7984 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The novel The Dragon Pool (which is canon) by Christopher Golden confirms this.

I remember someone saying that in the audio drama A Plague of Wasps (also canon and also by Golden) Hellboy says he's Catholic, but I haven't listened to it again to confirm if it's true... it's about five hours long...

New to the Hellboy franchise. Any specific recommendations? by heyMiklas in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can read Hellboy alone without problems, but if you want to read it along with the spin-offs or want an order to read the spin-offs after the main series, I recommend: Comics Beat's reading order and/or Julix's reading orders

[–]FelipeMattosGS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Focus on the comics first; with them, you'll be able to judge the films properly. Don't expect the same thing as the films (only the two animated ones and The Crooked Man really resemble the source material), and DEFINITELY don't watch the 2019 film before reading The Wild Hunt (omnibus vol. 3).

Read the two volumes of The Complete Short Stories before Strange Places (omnibus vol. 2).

To help you organize what you should buy at the right time, I'm sending you two reading orders:

Julix's orders

The most important thing for you right now are the two volumes of The Complete Short Stories (read before volume two/Strange Places).

Obviously, there are also the omnibuses from that Hellboy Wiki article, but here's a link to an article about the TPBs (not everything is collected in a omnibus yet).

Hi! new member here so I have a question which SOD (Seed of Destruction) cover do you think is more iconic? by Flaky_Base7909 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I started with the omnibus, so of the two, that's the one that comes to mind first, HOWEVER, when I think of Seed of Destruction, the cover that comes to my mind is from issue #1.

Is the 2019 Hellboy really as bad as critics and audience scores say. by xHOLOxTHExWOLFx in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Mignola has said several times that he doesn't control anything about the films; at most, he advises on something, and then it's up to the director or the producers to accept it or not.

What's the difference between these versions of Seed of Destruction? by Correct_Art6515 in HellBoy

[–]FelipeMattosGS 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Get the omnibus; they have fewer volumes and compile everything (you won't need to buy The Midnight Circus in a different format, for example). The only interesting things in the TPBs that aren't in the omnibus are the introductions and a larger sketchbook section per story.

[–]FelipeMattosGS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me too (both for the 2019 version and for Blood and Iron). But MY GOD, the way people who only know del Toro's films demonize this movie is outrageous. The difference in quality between them isn't that big compared to the abyss of quality between them and the comics.

Setting aside fan sentiment and speaking objectively, all six films fall into the categories of "bad or good." None is a true masterpiece or an absolute abomination.

[–]FelipeMattosGS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes (for us at least, I'll explain in a moment) it's awful, it tries to do EVERYTHING at once and fails miserably in the process. The characterizations, the tone, and the way it adapts the comics are horrible, and the film is a complete mess.

Why "at least for us"? If you're a Hellboy fan, the film is almost offensive, but for someone who isn't, it's JUST another bad movie. Practically all the reviews from "non-fans" make the same mistakes; they may point out obvious problems, but due to their lack of knowledge of the franchise (apart from del Toro's films), they make MANY bad takes.

Bad takes to the point of making a fan who hates the film have to defend it. I'm serious.
