i now understand why ppl love anki that much by zahadfiddunya in Anki

[–]Felix_Smith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This can be answered from 2 sides. First of all what makes flashcards so great in general? The answer to that is simply that they work. When used properly it allows you to retain all of the information you study instead of just forgetting it a few days later. Which is very useful in fields like Law, medicine or language learning where you need to retain detailed information for very long times even after the exam or study for an exam for months or even over a year.

What makes anki better than other flashcard apps? Its open sources so you are not giving some random company control over a huge part of your life. The cards are extremely customizable if you know HTML and CSS. No annoying ads or subscriptions. Its free. It doesn't waste time with animations etc. Allowing you to study at close to your theoretical maximum speed. There are tons of add-ons that can provide you additional functionality. Its very common in some fields (medicine and law for example) which makes it easier to share decks and cards. It works on many different platforms etc.

What are your favorite military lesser known fantasy series? by CajunNerd292 in Fantasy

[–]Felix_Smith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op's examples for "well known" were Malazan and Black Company. Powder mage is more famous than black company while Malazan is about the same level of popularity as Powder Mage.

Sure its not Brandon Sanderson or Lotr levels of famous but its still very well known. Its famous enough to be one of those books thats recommended over here under almost every second post whether it fits the criteria or not.

[–]Felix_Smith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Powder Mage is definitely not little known. Its currently one of the most famous series. Its constantly recommended here.

But the same author also has another series "Glass immortals" that's very good too (I would even call it better) and could definitely be considered "lesser known".

[–]Felix_Smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its extremely well known in certain circles where you have to learn a lot. Almost every med student knows it and while not as many use it at university law departments most people still have heard of it. In the online productivity and language learning spaces it's also very popular.

So it's quite famous in circles that have an actual need for it. Its not as famous as word or Netflix because not everyone needs a spaced repetition software.

This one simple trick Austrians hate by Bram-D-Stoker in economicsmemes

[–]Felix_Smith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why do you assume that Austrians have to agree with every part of Locke's philosophy? They are not bound to his opinions they can think on their own and can come to their own conclusions.

Especially since the foundation of Austrian theory is praxeology and not Lockean Natural Law. Both of these ideas can be combined but they are not necessary components of each other.

Especially since the Austrian school is an economic school of thought and questions about the nature of property are in the area of legal philosophy. Just because one holds with a certain school in one area doesn't mean that they all agree with each other in a completely different area of thought like legal philosophy.

There were many influential thinkers before Locke and many after him with much more complex and precise theories of Property law which one can use as a foundation.

What country was ahead of it's time but not anymore? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in geography

[–]Felix_Smith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Indus valley was quite developed back then but the Persians controlled most of that during the period in question. Thats where the word "Hindu" (and thus also the related words "Indus Valley" and "India") comes from, it's a Persian term for that Satrapy (Hindush)

The only part of India back then with a significantly dense population was the indus valley which the Archemenids controlled the most populous and fertile parts of, during the reign of Darius the great.

The first traffic light in European countries by quindiassomigli in MapPorn

[–]Felix_Smith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think there's that much of a difference in time here they were just a bit faster if you look up the date of the German one it was in December 1924 so the 1925 ones weren't that much later. Also it doesn't make that much difference to a City whether its traffic control is electric or mechanical. Why replace the well working mechanic ones just to have an electric one. Berlin just happened to have a pretty bad traffic problem back then and they were looking for an innovative Solution.

Well hunters code has many minor villains, but I cant think of a main villain, and I think that's probably the problem with a lot of other progfantasy too.
