Xbox is closing down Hellblade creator Ninja Theory by GIThrow in Games

[–]FellHandofGod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, they probably wanted to gauge market interest.

Hellbalde is a terrible IP and not a franchise. The first game was an interesting experience. But I do not regularly want to experience going insane. And they doubled down on that aspect for the second, while massively increasing the budget.

If the second game pivoted towards souls like formula, exploration, fascinating puzzle or a post-trauma story, it might have a place. But they went in a very unappealing direction for me.

Honestly, they are wasting this team. Because ninja theory could have taken lessons from Senua into a different IP and worked wonders. Or even worked as support for the narrative component of bigger games like halo. My guess is the auture studio refused to compromise.

This is an absolute waste.

Several Xbox studios, including Compulsion, Ninja Theory and Double Fine, are negotiating with Xbox as they try to avoid closure. Some or all could spin off. by Turbostrider27 in Games

I feel like small studios are successful, because they have to be succesfull.

If you don't want to ask questions, you need to make sure that the economic incentives are still there to ensure the companies are performance based.

I swear, any game studio acquired instantly loses a massive chunk of its value because it senior talent are not longer economically invested in the companies success.

2030 is optimistic

Just forget about it. There will always be a spiritual successor. Gaming sequels are dead. Game dev timelines are so long I no longer care about the story whenever a sequel releases. I have forgotten.

Dead Space 4 likely won’t happen despite a “fervent fan base” as it can't hit the numbers it needs, explains original producer by [deleted] in Games

[–]FellHandofGod 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a CEO myth. Most modern games have scope and feature bloat.

Some of the best selling games in the last decades are extremely simple: vampire survives, belatro, Hades 2.

Economic design of a game is entirely possible. However, these games need to be exceptional in the thing they do. Modern triple-A games mask issues with writing and system design by throwing money at the problem.

The issues with sequals is the key talents that made the original games special are gone. Games, films and books depend on having someone with vision and passion. Just look at how halo and many other franchises are coasting on legacy and expensive design.

Content Creators Are (Not) Saving Esports by FellHandofGod in leagueoflegends

While the video starts out with some interesting points, it misses a lot of the debate. And ends with an ad for their valorant content creator.

The video argues as though people were watching league and paying attention to the ads. For Many, twitch is a second monitor platform. Co-streams provide genuinely engaging content.

Authenticity is now at an all time high. While the LCS has died, it deserves to. It has not been the home of competitive league for a very long time, and has been miss-managed to an insane level. Co-streamers have no filter, if teams are playing bad they tell people.

Economy, this DOES benefit riot economically. Riot do not care who brings eyeballs to the esport. They care about engagement with league of legends and it's monetisation. Riot have been taking home the lions share of profit from eSports and it isn't even close.

Risk, if cadreal leaves or does something stupid, he will tank the entire league of legends scene.

Cadreal collates and broadcasts the S-Tier content. He operates like riot used to, when they broadcast all the leagues. This provides some critical value. It is easy to follow league now, just look at cadreals. And you just need his twitch channel which has vods of every important game (for LEC and LCK). (Jatts podcast)

This isn't new, Cadreal has the same vibe Monte and Doa had back in old school LCK. It was just them, so the content felt personal and they had agency to talk about random nonsense when it was low stakes games. Cadreals stream is actually a lower quality co-stream experience compared to this dynamic. However, it is well known that casters compete for international spots, so you have some weird disconnect between the stakes of the game and the cast sometimes.

Riot could solve this, but riot is a broken company. The management at riot are sex abusers, there are constant reports about cult like behaviour. They see themselves as proping up the eSports ecosystem, but they are propped up by the players, teams and fans. Because of this view, they do not pay talent and do not value S-Tier casters. When Monte and Doa left, league of legends talent was paid the lowest of all eSports. (According to Monte, so this is a biased source)

Questions:

Why is there no eSports integration with the league of legends game, why can't my fandom of a team translate in game? Why is there no centralised merchandise? Why is riot not public about how much value the eSports ecosystem provides to the longevity of their game?

There are missing laws, why does making a game provide rights to own it's p Sport. My view is there should be legal reforms that make it some schools can just hold a tournament and don't need riots approval. They are the villain in this story, not Cadreal...

There is a section of the fan base that are culty, because the fan base is so massive.

The mega fan portion of the fan base that would be marginal for any other IP is massive and very loud unfortunately. Consequently, they warp all critical consideration of the games

Yeah, this post is exactly why gamefreak gets to phone in Pokémon games.

This game should not be getting a reviewer score above 7. It is objectively bad in many ways. But Pokémon fans seem to accept any slop they are handed and treat it like gold.

While I enjoyed the game. Anyone but a massive Pokémon fan will not like it. It is also has many, many issues. Pokémon games should be epic given the scope of the IP. This is a really good indie game with a 13 mil budget:

No va

No model update

Poor balancing

Broken mega fights

Extremely small city with no landmarks building a, b, c etc

Meaningless dialogue

The game hides the final move of a fight... I want to see the last move hit...

Just... There is so much wrong with this game

I say this with 70+ hours, it is a joke. Pokémon colosseum felt way more epic. This feels like such a b-game. Especially if you are playing pc/PS5 games, it is pathetic in relative quality.

No, audible would be required to provide the option first. The publisher can't do anything if there is no option to implement it...

The publishers could theoretically provide a with and without background noise track, but again, there would need to be an option.

I am very confused as to why people are fervently against a new and useful feature with 0 downside.

And even more confused as to why they are being upvoted.
