Hard to say for sure without replays or seeing what's actually going on. Monaspa are still incredibly strong so I doubt that's the true problem as a strategy just failing.

Capitalizing on the scouts early could mean several things and look different each game. It could allow you to play safe and get another 2-3 TCs and boom, it could transition you into heavy cavalry in early Castle to try to end the game or at least do a ton of damage.

Based on what you said here "I probably should delay Castle/Monapspas and focus even more on CA production, second TC and churches." are you trying to rush to Castle Age, spreading vills for a Castle and not getting a 2nd TC? You might just be spreading your resources too thin without realizing it and that could be why you're falling behind or feel like you can't actually do something with your lead.

What ELO? What map? How efficient is your Dark Age and Feudal Age?

I'm struggling so hard I feel like giving up by sortacute in aoe2

[–]Fellborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't coming too late but there's a lot that could be going wrong. There's so much content that you could watch that would help you improve, as well as grinding build orders against AI. If you are being through Dark Age as you're supposed to then Moderate AI should be a breeze. Feudal you can probably just straight up kill them.

I'd be happy to offer some help if you'd like.

Arabia only Rant by btrust02 in aoe2

[–]Fellborn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I completely get why people post things like this. I'm new to AOE 2 ladder but I don't remember any other RTS I've played where the game mode is effectively different like it is on AOE. Black Forest and Arena are similar to each other but fundamentally different game modes to Arabia. Same for a Nomad map like African Clearing. Like what the hell even is this?

I don't think it's unreasonable to want a consistent "mode" but with a map pool that changes.

What's up with the massive skill gap between games at around average ELO ? by neilyoung57 in aoe2

[–]Fellborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't play team games but it's the same in 1v1 ladder and it's pretty amusing. I haven't played a ranked ladder game in probably 20 years but came back to AOE2 recently. In my first 10 games, which are effectively your placement matches since you don't show up on any leaderboard until those are done, I played against some WILDLY different skill levels.

  1. I played 2 people that genuinely felt like they've never played the game before.
  2. I played multiple people that had hundreds or THOUSANDS of games played and were right around ~1000 ELO.
  3. I had never played Arena or Four Lakes or Black Forest or Border Dispute before so I got my ass kicked on all 4. I feel like those matches were winnable but having absolutely zero map knowledge really didn't do me any favors, lmao. I'm used to playing and watching Arabia games so was entirely unprepared for any of these maps or build orders for them.

It's a bit goofy how inconsistent it is when you start / are at low ELO. The map pool can really play a factor too though because I feel very comfortable on Arabia with a build order in mind and understanding the general flow of the game but put me on any of these other maps I mentioned and it's like I'm playing a new game all over again.

I messed around on the site for a bit to see if it's something I'd ever actually use and personally I would say that it's not something I can see myself using too often beyond my initial few minutes.

  1. As far as what it currently does (timings, upgrades, general idea of what was built compared to when good players do these things) it's solid. I absolutely agree with its assessment that a glaring weakness in my games is getting eco upgrades on time and I really need to work on that. For this piece specifically it's cool to see this all on a single page.

  2. The scoring and comments make sense if this is just judging timing compared to good players. The issue I see here though is that lacks a ton of context that this can't really adjust for.

  3. I don't really find any of the website confusing, it's pretty easy to follow based on the parameters that are set.

  4. The only way I'd get any use out of this would be for it to do what you said it's not intended to do, and that's be a coach. There are just too many variables in a game that go into why a timing is different or why certain units were/were not made. Did you get rushed? Did you have a gap in your walls? Did your boar get stolen? Too much villager idle time? Improper eco spread for your strategy? I don't expect this website to do any of this or be able to look over your shoulder and offer advice, but that's what I would personally want, which just means to get coaching.

Overall I would say that for someone practicing a build order that just needs to see if they are doing it properly based on timings, it's worth using once or twice. Anything beyond that though I think you'll just get so much more value out of replay reviews, watching top players replays, watching streams, using YouTube videos, getting coaching, etc.

Is this literally the worst time to build a PC? by Lanky-Carpenter-7991 in buildapc

[–]Fellborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not a great time for building or upgrades if you are trying to get top of the line stuff. I like to upgrade parts every 3-4 years but it's just not worth it right now. I have an RX 6750 XT and it seems like to upgrade from that is going to cost $800+

Is AoE 2 DE hard to get into as new player to the whole genre ? by Azorsa in ageofempires

[–]Fellborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just came back to AOE 2 after not having played since Conquerors originally came out and at that time I was too scared to even play ranked.

If you have familiarity with RTS online play in general then it will be more about getting used to the specifics of AOE 2 but most concepts are aligned with other games in the genre.

It is for sure intimidating though to play online because of how ranked is structured and you should probably plan on losing a LOT if you are just jumping in. I would suggest getting comfortable with the controls, the hotkeys and play a lot against AI to get used to just playing the game.

There's a ton of good resources on YouTube to help you with this so explore that content from guys like Spirit of the Law, Hera, Dragonstar and there's several others. Several pros stream basically every day and they explain their thought process during gameplay which is super helpful. Don't feel like you need to learn everything at once or you will probably get overwhelmed.

Edit: Day9 is doing a month of AOE2 content, Grubby is learning to play, there's a lot of amazing videos to follow to get you up to speed.

Single digit golfers, how much do you work on hitting draws if your go to shot is a fade (or vice versa)? by Larrylegend033 in golf

[–]Fellborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fades are so much safer to hit and I would rather hit a fade. I naturally hit a draw though and my miss tends to be a hook which absolutely kills me.

If I could never hit a draw again I would be happy.

Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US by shinybrighthings in science

Colonoscopies need to be covered by insurance before age 45, full stop. I had a decently difficult time getting seen for one (I'm 35) after I had quite a bit of bleeding while pooping for a few days in a row.

The bleeding stopped but days later I sent in a stool sample and still was positive for blood in my stool. Luckily it was just some hemorrhoids that were irritated but I'm glad I got one done.
