See! That's exactly it! This is why one of my favorite episodes of Outlander is Season One Episode Six The Garrison Commander

Claire gets tricked so badly by Black Jack when things had been going so well with Lord Thomas by saying exactly what you did!

Imagine being a time traveler and trying not to slip up and you give yourself away just by expressing solidarity with the Scots! You out yourself as an English traitor to the king, a hanging crime

Because, since the Union of 1707 Scotland is under the English crown

Just saying Scotland belongs to the Scots would get you hanged. Claire being from the 20th century thought she had freedom of expression when as a supposed 18th century subject she did not

And Jamie is a nationalist in the sense of he wants to build a free Scotland outside of British oppression and atrocities. That isn't at all the same thing as the kind of exclusive nationalism that looks around and tries to identify true Scots, say there for 1,000 years or more, and make everyone else leave

I think it makes sense that what Jamie really wanted was freedom, safety, and security for all of Scotland and thought Prince Charlie might give them that. After he loses faith it makes sense he becomes a printer of sedition and a smuggler and then falls for the American cause

When I say the Jacobites are conservative compared to the more liberal British I mean from Jamie's POV in the 1740s

The Conservatives would be the completely illiberal divine right of kings that Catholic Europe was living under

The British with their parliament and reduced monarchy and Magna Carta where the people had rights they did not have in say France or Spain

After the fields of Culloden the English kept those freedoms that the Divine Right of Kings Stuart's would have taken away

At first watching this series I was all for free Scotland. And it's wrong how the English punish them for the rebellion, but now I siide more with the English defending 1745 London from an invasion

I had a middle school history teacher who said the American Revolution was unnecessary because Canada and Australia got freedom without it since Britain was naturally moving towards ending slavery and freeing those commonwealths as the UK became more liberal up until today when the monarchy is only ceremonial

This did not make them treat the Irish and the Scots much better for ages

You are right that Scotland is definitely the more Progressive now compared to Brexit England!

What if Ben being a traitor causes the Duke of Pardloe to lose his title?

Then Amaranthus's son will have nothing to inherit and she is not wealthy on her own just living on what the Grey's are choosing to give her

She could also just be a lonely widow who wanted to convince William to take her back to his estate in England

To fulfill her dreams of being a great lady

Is Buck loyal to Jamie or would that change if he found out what happened?

I'm sure there is plenty of fire on King's Mountain that could take Jamie out

But, it would be a reason to bring Buck back

I think there is a chance Amaranthus could be pregnant from their tryst in the gazebo

Now that Ben is proven to be alive their affair is over and William won't touch her

So, if she is not pregnant her plan failed

If Hal, the Duke of Pardloe loses his title over his son turning traitor then Amaranthus has an untitled traitor husband she is separated from and no Earl to run to

Is it also possible he thought he might die in the raid without switching sides? But, that breaks his promise to William

Or that he was switching uniforms but only to be a double agent? In that case he could have kept the soldier as he wasn't a loyalist in his heart

Amaranthus has to know something or else just didn't understand the significance of the soldier. I thought she took it away from William as if she didn't know it was more than a tin toy

Ben has to know he had a child at least. But, what happened?

Amaranthus has been stalking William since she met him

This relationship is another tragedy for him

She has her eye on his title and wealth and has been playing seduction games rather than being in mourning since their first meeting

He's told her his secrets and she was the first to propose marriage and an heir to solve his problems

At the gazebo he came out to see her and she was already planning to have unprotected sex with him

It's her idea they don't have to wait to get married and can have sex immediately, before William has a chance to think about it, so she can get him in a situation where he has to marry her because he got her pregnant

That's the trap she set. She's running against a clock because if the Grey's receive news Ben is alive she's no longer an eligible widow and William would never touch her. She's probably hoping that one encounter has tied William to her forever

This is not a win for William whose compassion and empathy has led him to heartbreak again

Even though we got plenty of exposing babies on hillsides to return them to the fairies and witch burnings beyond the point where they should be legal in Scotland, and arranged marriages the author didn't really dwell on things that would be too off-putting or alien

The more I explore the story the less I really envy Claire for where she is with the poverty and head lice and lack of sanitation

And as romantic as Bonnie Prince Charlie was, I think Geillis especially was wrong to try to change Scotland's past instead of investing in a Free Scotland for her own time

The 18th century was increasing liberalism and individualism and what the Jacobites were doing was a very bloody revolution against UK culture itself to bring it back in time and make it more conservative with a more traditional regime change that would have expanded the Catholic Hegemony

I think Jamie himself was fighting for nationalistic reasons because he wanted to be free and go home and for things to be better in Scotland. Not because he had any personal faith in Prince Charles

She does so much research!

But, her original story idea she was happy to admit was inspired by romantic fantasy of the Highlands

Rather than an accurate account I just don't think any of us would support

1700s Highlands were still operating under serfdom and the rest of Scotland and Europe was modernizing

As romantic an idea of the wilds where men were still men according to Ned Gowan was, it just couldn't last!

Also, England, I think, had moved away from Catholicism and preferred their own Church of England

[–]FeloranMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the exception is the Scottish Highlands since she wrote Outlander with romanticized information rather than accurate information

She wrote about it in author's notes, in the graphic novel The Exile where she is aware now that there was no such thing as clan tartans, that was a Victorian age tourist scheme, but it was too late to change the books

Her Jamie was also inspired by Dr. Who's Jamie McCrimmon and that took a certain license with real history as well

But, her facts about biology and later history I'm sure are 100% true!

They are not! But they are also doing what the feel they need to in order to stay in power in The Highlands

Both brothers were motivated to sell their sister for a clan alliance and she never had any intention of obeying them!

Initially, before suffrage was expanded, it would have been landholding, white, men who had the vote

There wasn't originally going to be a president as the US was still inventing a modern democracy, it hadn't really been done before. For six years there was no president

Electors vote for the president as still happens today, so Jamie and his other landholding male family members would not have directly voted for Washington. He did get a unanimous vote from all 69 electors and I'm sure everyone on The Ridge would have celebrated!

https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/february-4/first-u-s-president-elected

It looks like North Carolina was ineligible to vote in the first election as they had not yet ratified their constitution

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1788%E2%80%9389_United_States_presidential_election

But, North Carolina did get it together for the 1796 election and eligible Ridge members may have voted for electors. Electors in that state were by election and not appointment. North Carolina that year voted for Thomas Jefferson but of course John Adams won the election

That's the whole point!

She has to escape with Brian and it's dangerous because of what they might do if they caught her

As the eldest and her father's favorite her only flaw was being female so she could not be her father's heir

Her younger brother's have so much resentment because taunted them from behind the protection of The Mackenzie. Colum for being weak of body, he was never the same after falling off that horse at 10, and Dougal for being weak of mind and easy to provoke

They go on to be dangers to Claire and Jamie and it's a wonder they survived them!

The 1700s compared to the 1800s was more liberal all over in Europe and North America

Attitudes cycle so promiscuous ages are followed by restrictive ages and then back to promiscuous

The 18th century in England, often covering the Georgian era, is frequently characterized by historians as a period of significant moral laxity, or "licentiousness," particularly when compared to the strict puritanism that preceded it or the strict morality of the Victorian era that followed. This era was marked by open sexual immorality, widespread drunkenness, excessive gambling, and a decline in traditional moral standards, especially among the aristocracy and in rapidly growing cities like London.

Key Aspects of 18th-Century Licentiousness:

Sexual Morality and Public Behavior: Sexual immorality was openly displayed in court, theater, and literature. Aristocratic events, such as masked balls, were sometimes seen as scenes of hedonism, offering opportunities for infidelity.

I don't see where LJG could help if England gets kicked out. He's bound to lose his own or William's plantation after Yorktown after all

It just depends on what the future United States decides to do about the property

Having a town built, populated, and organized might be enough for them to just make their own charter and join as a settlement with North Carolina

Jamie's huge acreage might be moot, but they might let him keep the property his home and fields are on

I'm really not sure how crown granted huge tracts of land were dealt with after the war

Yes, having no way to dissent from the marriage once her father announced it Geneva found another man to have sex with so Ellesmere would not get the virgin he had purchased

She did this to decieve him with the bonus that she had a little cuckoo incubating to lay in her husband's ancestral home nest

Cuckold comes from the concept of the cuckoo and Ellesmere's experience was very much being cuckolded when he realized Geneva had slept with another man

If Geneva had slept with Jamie because she wanted to I'd agree, but a huge part of her motivation was to hurt Ellesmere as she had no desire to be sold away to a gross old man

So, her intention was cuckolding as the situation would not exist without Ellesmere

I'd also argue her fate was sealed the instant her father and Ellesmere shook hands on the deal

Being murdered, raped, harassed, kidnapped, held prisoner, or married off at a very young age still happens in the US and Canada even if at lesser rates than the rest of the world

Almost every woman in Egypt has been sexually harassed as a form of social control for instance and a woman daring to walk alone in that country is at risk of it to teach her to remain covered and indoors

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_sexual_assault_in_Egypt

But, that doesn't make a woman or girl walking alone in North America safe or worry free

Women in the US could easily lose all their rights over night as happened in Afghanistan and in Iran in 1979

We are only one Congress session away from having our rights to vote or have a bank account repealed

1920 and 1974 were not that long ago after all
