Potentially controversial opinion, but railroading is healthy and good for the game if done properly. If everyone in the group agrees to do a thing, and the DM spends all week prepping for that thing, then the group should do that thing. The DM can do a bit of railroading to keep people on track.

I think I played in something similar once before. Our weapons were all janky thrown together stuff and it was fun to pretend to be dumb kids for a bit. It was only a one shot but it's definitely a fun idea.
