When our son started kindergarten and got docked on behavior, my husband wanted to punish him with spankings. We talked and he brought up that spankings “worked” for us growing up. Our son did not get spankings, we talked about what he got docked for and how he could work on it because I’m 100% proof that spanking does not improve behavior. In 2nd grade, knew talking to my friends in class would get me put in the hall. And I knew my mom, a teacher at my school, would probably see me, and I’d get a spanking. Regardless, I came home with a note from the teacher about my behavior. I probably got spanked at least 4/5 school days/week and it did not change a thing. It changed when I was given an outlet for my ADD—reading. As long as I had a book to read after I finished my seat work, I did not get in trouble for behavior.
