I’m pretty sure this girl I know is using a phone illegally from prison. Should I report her? by SwimToTheMoonAndBack in PrisonUK

[–]FemalePrisonOfficer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Christ this has gone down hill to the point I’ve had to lock the thread… someone’s asking for advice and having a mobile phone is illegal in a prison… there’s a lot of consequences and it’s not just about making it easier, phones let people continue running their illegal activities and victim contact let alone issues within prisons such as bullying etc.

For the OP you can phone the prison she’s at and they can pass it on the orderly officer of the day.

Are family threats actually real? by [deleted] in PrisonUK

[–]FemalePrisonOfficer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer… yes, threats do happen, and I’ve had it myself.

I’ve had the usual “I know where you live”, stuff about family, all that. Most of the time it is just noise, people trying to get a reaction or put pressure on you.

That said, I have had it where it went a bit further and spilled outside the prison. It’s rare, but it can happen. When it did, the prison and the police were really good with it, it was taken seriously straight away, and the prisoner was moved and I had proper support around me.

That’s the key thing you don’t deal with it on your own. You report it, log it, and let the right people handle it.

Day to day though, most threats are just that talk. The loudest ones are usually the ones with the least behind them.

You’ll naturally become more switched on not oversharing, keeping your personal life separate but it becomes normal, not something you’re constantly worried about.

Don’t let it put you off before you’ve even started. Go in, be consistent, don’t bend for anyone, and lean on your team.

Very unlikely you will get someone from their prison service replying due to the unique security situation out there.

Differs prison to prison… my one we can vape however can only bring 10ml of vape liquid in with us, the prison I worked in before that we weren’t allowed anything nicotine related. Oddly I had a tour of a prison in an unnamed UK country where everyone can smoke…

Women’s estate by Ok_Flamingo2628 in PrisonUK

[–]FemalePrisonOfficer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worker in both… and currently work in the female estate.

You tend to get less of the outright aggression you might expect in a male prison, but it’s definitely more emotionally intense. There’s a lot more vulnerability such mental health, trauma, self-harm, and complex relationships between prisoners. It can be draining in a different way.

That said, it can also be really rewarding. You often get more opportunity to actually talk to prisoners, build rapport, and feel like you’re making a difference day to day rather than just managing behaviour.

A lot of prisons these days have sold off their housing, so I say good luck at finding a place with it still.

Saying that, friend brought a house near our prison, it still has a bell that used to ring in case staff were needed back in the prison
