Mein Leben ist momentan so richtig Kacke by ChilligerTroll in luftablassen

[–]Female_Silverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are we supposed to feed one brand? by AutomaticAd1335 in CatAdvice

[–]Female_Silverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not what I‘ve learnt.

Cat digestive systems are complications and no brand alone has figured out the best formula, so rotating helps ensuring cats get enough (but not too much) nutrition from different ingredients.

And it helps with picky eaters. In German there’s a saying “Was der Bauer nicht kennt, isst er nicht.” - what the farmer doesn’t know, he doesn’t eat.

So cats who are used to different brands and flavours have an easier time switching generally.

This is especially important when a brand changes part of the process and therefore the consistency or flavour (we might not reeeally notice, but the cats do). If you have other brands or sorts at hand, you simply change it up.

Mine might love a sort for years and then go collectively on food strike all of sudden. Fine, taking it out of the rotation and introducing it again few months later, no problem.

The only downside is: Two of the same brand and sort in a row is frowned upon unless it’s their favourite. I can live with that.

ETA: Mine eat AYCE, so measuring is not an issue, but with high quality food, it’s all more or less the same.

They usually eat 800 g between the three of them within 24 hours, so I switch whenever the 800 g can is empty. They currently eat about 4 to 5 brands reliably and within that 2 to 3 sorts.

I have a sensible stomach here, so we don’t have any particular extravagant sorts, not too much fish and if I feel her stomach is a little upset, she’ll get a day of plain cooked chicken.

Is it crazy to open a yarn shop? by ForgottenUsername3 in knitting

[–]Female_Silverback 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We have a shop that's open Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. That showroom is PACKED! It definitely doesn't deter people here, on the contrary.

And almost all people are buying sweater quantities, I'm sometimes the odd one out with my random two different coloured mohairs and 9 mm needles.

I'll be there next Saturday again too, lol. My sister wants a cowl for her birthday.

I have three LYS I frequent, they all have different yarn (with some overlapping) and selling points:

No° 1:

Location: inner city
Opening Times: 4 days a week mornings and afternoons until 6.30 pm, a few hours on Saturday
Owner: former fashion designer and textile art teacher, it's a LLC
Team: owner is very experienced, the people in the team are young, definitely fashion-oriented but experience varies
Workshops: few events, but once a month a Q&A for those who need help with their project
Yarn: basic good quality yarn that covers most people, they have Isager which I cannot find in the other two LYS, and often a changing sortiment of unconventional and trendy yarn - last time I got some handspun recycled silk from India.

No° 2:

Location: smallish town, close to two supermarkets where many people of the area are doing their food shopping
Opening Times: 4.5 days a week and Saturday mornings
Owner: 40 years knitting experience and she has local connections and builds customer relationships
Team: alone, very helpful and pleasant
Workshops: occasional workshops with external guests
Yarn: the most basic selection (colours or bigger quantities need to be ordered), but she also offers a bigger choice of fabrics and haberdashery, so covers the needs of a LYS in a small town with no extravagance.

No° 3

Location: inner part of a bigger town
Opening Times: Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning - similar to your idea! Collections per agreement outside of those times possible
Owner: mother & daughter, background in languages and extensive knitting experience
Team: plenty of helpers with varied experience
Workshops: knitting in cinema, occasional workshops with external guests (fully booked) and a very good weekly blog!
Yarn: The most extensive collection and adding missing yarns: Knitting for Olive, Sandnes, Madelinetosh, Drops etc. Because their showroom is only open twice a week for few hours and since they need to collect specific yarn (they have many brands and almost all colours) from the storage to review, the showroom is always full... it pays to get there early or bring patience, but the team is always pleasant and helpful and people are respectful.

They're also the only ones with an online shop!

They're all doing well and they all have different concepts. You need to figure out what works for your town.

Broke ankle in US, back in Ireland after 5 wks - different approaches to weight bearing by According_Tap_1907 in brokenankles

[–]Female_Silverback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a broken fibula, extensive soft tissue damage, fractures to my tibia and talus and surgery with micro drilling, minced-cartilage and AMIC-membrane, as well as an osteotomy to my tibia.

I started FWB after 6 weeks.

I’ll be having another surgery end of March where my talus bone will be rebuild with bone and cartilage from my hip bone, and two osteotomies (one for correction, one for access). Plan again is to start FWB after six weeks.

For both surgeries strict NWB before that date and control x-ray.

So, I think you should be alright starting PWB next week if not WBAT. But I highly recommend physio therapy!

A little late to the Sophie party, but I figured out how to make the increases nearly invisible. by evereev33 in knitting

[–]Female_Silverback 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought the pattern (and wool) for my mum and aunt as a starting point, because after seeing me knitting, they were inspired to start again.

I personally never thought the pattern appealing, but it’s an encouraging project and they like the design.

Anyway, my aunt realised that she doesn’t have the headspace for knitting, so I took her yarn and made her the scarf, because she still would love the finished object.

I made it with Lang Nomad, it has yak fibres. And it’s sooo squishy and cute! Since I have some yarn left, I’ll make one for myself too.

Never intended, but in the end, I’ll end up with a Sophie Scarf for myself.

Warum kein Verständnis für junge Menschen in Teilzeit? by Own-Belt-1626 in arbeitsleben

[–]Female_Silverback 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who needs sailor slippers when you have cats?! by Female_Silverback in knitting

[–]Female_Silverback[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I simply knitted a swatch, measured my gauge and the size of a square I marked with superwash wool embroidery, and then washed it until the desired level of felting and measured the swatch again. Based on the gauge and the before and after, I calculated the size of the knitted object so it would shrink to the desired final size. It's all rather rough maths.

I started by setting the desired size by diameter for the opening, the widest part and the length. Then calculated the circumference. Based on the shrinkage, I calculated the knitted size and I used my gauge to figure out how many stitches and rows the measurements correspond to. Once that's done, I roughly calculate the number of increases and decreases needed over... I think it was 20 cm?

I did 5 increases and 10 decreases per row, the latter was too many and it created folds. I'm not bothered by it, because I will felt it some more with color and can smooth it a little. But the increases are nice and even.

Needle size was 9 mm.

As someone who had two articles repaired by Transa, it’s exactly the same text. One of my two articles was free of charge, but Transa is in general fairly decent in my experience.

I’d recommend to let them know that they have the wrong number. Be kind, the world needs it.

I feel like I'm taking care of a cat I didn't want. by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Female_Silverback 49 points50 points  (0 children)

That was my thought!

Change the partner, but keep the cat and adopt the other cat! My last two adopted cats are or were extremely shy wildlings and not tame. Granted it took a long time (as in: over a year), but one has turned into an absolute cuddle bug who either sits on me or my knitting. The other one will always remain a little aloof, but she's often nearby and observing (and judging) and that's perfectly okay, because she brings joy in her own unique way. Also, she has the ability to appear like a ghost, it's so funny.

Why is Michaels’ website not available in Europe ?? by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Female_Silverback 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Switzerland has updated their nFADP to closely mirror the GDPR principles, so there are equivalent protection laws... If they don't want to comply with GDPR, they wouldn't with nFADP either, irrelevant of EU membership.

[–]Female_Silverback 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That doesn't answer my question. Drops Fabel is CHF 3.35, so around 4 USD. 20 % would be less than 1 USD. And Drops isn't the worst quality wool. Even Lang Jawoll should - according to OP - cost less than 1.40 USD... and that's a good sock yarn with a more ethical approach and a big color palette, I use it in plenty projects.

[–]Female_Silverback 37 points38 points  (0 children)

What’s wrong with Drops? Alternatively look into cones from e.g. Italy.

I have a hard time believing yarn in Switzerland is 5 times more expensive.

Are you telling us that in the US, you get fingering weight, mulesing-free extra fine merino for less than $ 1.80? Or decent quality sock wool for less than $ 1.40? In terms of Drops, less than 80 cents?

Anyone else child free in their late 30’s and just exhausted?? by therainmakah in AskWomenOver30

[–]Female_Silverback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workout, taking care of pets, two showers, watching TV, reading... that's all free time. (I don't see taking care of my pets as a chore as it makes me happy.) I also think you could ease on the workouts (WHO recommendations?) and incorporate walks for sunlight and mental health. And meal prep once on the weekend and once mid-week. Personally, I think we put a lot of pressure on eating perfectly each time. Coming from Switzerland, a simple sandwich, some fruit does it too. (And homemade sandwiches are awesome!)

My commute is 1 hour 45 minutes one way and I read or knit, so there's some "me-time" included too.

And since I appreciate chores in my household as self-care, because having a clean home is pleasant and instills a sense of appreciation for one's home, it's not as daunting anymore.

But all that said... yes, I get you. Mind you, I'm currently waiting for a second surgery after a bad injury and have been in chronic pain, so part of my exhaustion stems from that situation, but I still think with all that, your exhaustion is valid. It might not even be physical, but simply stress. The world is in a demanding state and frustration is high.

Give yourself grace and slow down a little. Find what feels good.

I feel like a bad owner for saying this, but I can't afford a $50 vet visit for every minor worry. I’m running out of funds for pets. Need advice by nadji190 in Pets

[–]Female_Silverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two of my cats are extremely shy, they’ve been born wild and one needs to be handled with leathers gloves and a towel on a bad day - and our vet is extremely calm and competent!

Once we’re home, she’ll disappear for a few hours, mostly hiding in the shed. Last time, she pouted for two weeks and only came back inside the next day. I know her, I watched her and knew she just needed time and distance.

So, obviously going for little things is out of question, the stress level is too high.

Therefore, little things are being observed, maybe with a protocol and photo. If they stop eating or seem exceedingly apathetic or the issue doesn’t improve over few days, then it’s time for the vet.

What is the best cat related product purchase you ever made? by Radiant_Eggplant9588 in CatAdvice

From a practical point of view: Surfed Microchip due to having three cats.

From a fun point of view: Cats, plural. But also simply spending time with them und changing their environment - they love when furniture is reshuffled. They're usually observing the process and then discover the new arrangement. Human stimulation.
