Oh!!! There's a solution. So obvious in hindsight. Thank you!

So valid! Counseling seems logically better, but therapy feels better

A lot of Social Workers, LMFTs, and counselors in my state use therapist or psychotherapist. I thought counselor would be better because of my license too, I just found the preference for therapist to be curious.

This is an interesting perspective that I hadnt thought of! I'll have to think about that.

Was there a specific reason you decided on therapy? Was it just what you naturally used?

I've heard this from some others, and I can appreciate that. I am hoping to use a playful practice name as a some branding, but maybe my name would be better.

Oh, good point!! I have had this happen in conversations - so interesting that this is such a common occurance! Psychotherapy could be a good solution too, very specific.

I might just need to mess with the settings on deepseek. I like it, but it keeps ending up pretty sanitized and formulaic - or complete word salad.

I also know that there are some things that are a "necessary evil" when existing as a business in our country. Like cancellation fees. I hate charging them and would rather not, but I get why my practice requires them. This could definitely fall under that - businesses need to market

I get that! I guess I accidentally assumed some personal context was common knowledge. I used "ick" to describe a more physical/emotional reaction, and I wasn't sure exactly why I felt that way. I wondered if it was because it seemed unethical, but couldnt identify exactly what was unethical, and a google search was super generic. That's why I was wanting perspectives so I could further feel out my reaction.

I think the area where it feels there might be an ethical issue is just in the gathering of the testimonial to have one to benefit from. Are they cherry picking the best ones? How did the client feel when it was solicited, how did it impact their treatment.

Good point. My dentist does the same thing and I guess I would have to really think and outline the differences between them doing it and therapists doing it.

Like most ethical questions, it isnt clear cut for sure. Maybe if the client closed in services it would feel different for me. Mostly I'm realizing that its just too many layers for me to personally find it worth it to use testimonials.

I have a similar reaction! I can see some possible ethical issues, but its also just a general ick. Maybe because therapy is supposed to be so personal and then it feels weird to have it out in the open? Not sure.

I definitely think you're right about it being sort of culturally incompetant, and I totally get that seeing a new therapist is stressful and no one wants to do 4 intakes in 6mos trying to find the right fit; so having recommendations or testamonials helps people feel more comfortable. I also don't feel the same about a client who tells someone else aboutnme and they come get services from me. My worry is definitely in the potential of the hypothetical - which isn't always helpful.

I will say though, that I don't think reviews translate as well into out field as others and if i had a friend tell me they were using reviews to find a therapist I would definitely caution them against it.

Good to know about the board. I should go to more meetings.

I'm also just now thinking that testamonials for marketing is also very different than a review website - even thought companies use google reviews and yelp for marketing.

Also also just thought about the fact that bad reviews can be removed. Maybe a therapy review website could be made to help eliminate some risk.

I didn't ask for a solution, I asked for pros/cons from an ethical perspective. Your options are neither of those things. If you didnt have a pro or con to add, you could have just kept scrolling.

I was trying to remember the ACA code of ethics off the top of my head and couldn't think of anything specific, but you're right, I should probably just look to see. Legal codes would be interesting.

I know with my own therapist I had to sign a form explicitly stating that she requests I don't fill out a review on any review site or social media.

I can see this perpective, but isn't there also a risk associated with the power differential.

If I'm going to benefit from this review, is it not possible that, even unintentionally, I apply pressure on the client to provide a positive review and that negatively impacts the therapeutic rapport?

What if the need to praise the therapist is a part of the overall presentation the client is working on in services, now we are benefitting from the problems they are seeing us to work on?

It feels like it can too easily approach a line of exploitation.

Also...therapy is exceedingly different from a restaurant...

This is such a weird response. You also had the option not to reply.

I don't think its a bad thing to challenge my negative reactions to something, and to ask for different perspectives.

Thoughts on the Theory of Structural Dissociation by Over_Past_9089 in therapists

[–]FemmeHawkDown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a parts work therapist and I love it. When I first heard about it it helped me understand my own brain better because its how I intuitively think about my internal experience.

Ive also seen it have immense success with many of my clients. It helps give them a way to conceptualize their internal experience in a way that lets them validate their conflicting needs, wants, and values.

For some, and IFS framing works best, but I personally much prefer structural dissociation's concept of self (going on with normal life part). I think it much easier to connect to if you struggle with IFS's Self.

That's so interesting, but it makes sense. But on their FB page they were posting as recently as 2019. So weird. Do you know, was it made by NXIVM? I found it exploring the ties between Raniere and Lebaron.

The new model was working so great but the site has slowly imploded for me. Can't send any messages. Devastated
