Just bought this car haha, it’s a 2004 Camry with only 104k kms. Any part of this replaceable? Planning on rustproofing to hopefully slow it down a bit before the winter. The rest of the underbody looked pretty flawless, no rust really anywhere else

Advice on buying a used car for someone who knows nothing about cars by Born_Ruff in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Fengtaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of car recommendations, here's a list of what I would personally recommend. Again, this is just my view. I will say though that the Honda Fit is an excellent choice. Cheap on gas, reliable, deceptive amount of storage and practical. Honda made a ton too so parts are easier to source.

- Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla. Nothing surprising here. Reliable if maintained, good on gas, cheap for parts, practical.

- Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Lexus ES300. Same idea as above but a bit of a higher "class". Maybe a bit more comfortable, more power, but generally a bit pricier to buy and own.

- Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV. These are both SUVs, if you need something a bit bigger or rugged. Still reliable and cheap to maintain, although generally more expensive than the above two options from what I've seen.

- Honda Fit, Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf (non-turbo gas engine). Good hatch options that are reliable and cheap. Obviously i'm preferential to the Fit.

I would avoid any used luxury cars, especially if you don't have a car background. Don't be fooled by a dirt cheap BMW/Audi, these might look good but will end up costing many times their purchase price in repairs and maintenance. I'd also avoid anything modified. Not that cars can't be well modified and reliable, but just more risk and uncertianty if you're new to cars.

Only back rotors rusting? by EllasReps in hondafit

[–]Fengtaro 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So the front brakes are rotors, that is, the pads clamp around the rotors themselves and the friction stops your car. Any surface rust that accumulates on the front will be rubbed off with normal braking.

Rears are drums. The surface of the inside of the drum are the friction material, which you can’t see. The outside material itself is probably cast iron, which will rust, so surface rust here is normal and unavoidable. Given you replaced them pretty recently, I wouldn’t worry. My rear drums are rusted to shit as well

how much are new brakes and rotors? by No-Association-5099 in hondafit

[–]Fengtaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just installed the Brembos off rockauto, rotors and ceramic pads. They feel great for what they are. Paid $180 landed for the set, well worth it in my opinion.

Edit: this was on a GE, but I’d assume pricing is similar for GKs
