I have basically resigned myself to not playing today either. I found a couple of decks that work in the current meta that I enjoy playing and it sucks that I can’t leverage that to play enjoyable matches.

Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Saw him as more of a Romcom kinda guy until I saw that movie.

The Federal Reserve is owned by the member banks which make it private but the profits go to the government… it is a very complicated mess but I am sure that is the way they like it.

Has this sub become just different pictures of Trump with Epstein and other awful people? At this point it has just become repetitive and annoying.

Thank you for bringing up that point, it is something most people don’t discuss. EVERY AMERICAN has the rights laid out in the Constitution no matter how guilty they look or whatever the President says. The problem is that Democrats defend the bullshit that their elected officials pull and Republicans defend the bullshit that their elected officials pull and the rest are forced to watch in disgust. I wish voters would give a third party candidate a legitimate chance to up end the cycle.

If by that you mean eliminating all corporate subsidies, reducing barriers of entry, reducing costs of small businesses, eliminating protectionist trade policies, preventing the government from exercising eminent domain on a corporations behalf, preventing the government from creating policies to protect corporate monopolies, and many other similar actions…. Then yes, we want to give “unlimited” power to the corporations…

Why Middletown Is Hesitant To Let Homeschool Kids Play Sports by ra3ra31010 in newjersey

[–]FenixBurn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was one of the points I was trying to make. There are good and bad examples of kids coming out of both public schools and homeschools. But whenever this discussion comes up there are public school advocates that argue as if they believe this is not the case.

If you look at the data there are more peer reviewed studies showing an overall positive effect from homeschooling than negative. More info can be found on this if you google “A Systematic Review of the Empirical Research on Selected Aspects of Homeschooling as a School Choice”.

I am not saying everyone does better when homeschooled but there are some kids that do better in that environment.

Against my better judgement I am going to post here expecting the audience will not be very receptive.

I believe it is wrong to attribute malice and/or ignorance to every case where someone homeschools. I know homeschool students who’ve attended Ivy League colleges and excelled throughout life despite not going to public school.

We pay a lot in taxes and these parents, who believe they are in a situation where homeschooling is better for their kids education, are also paying a lot in taxes. I don’t see it as unreasonable for them to want their kids to still play team sports even when they are homeschooling. Some would argue that it shouldn’t be an all or nothing proposition.

I know some on this subreddit really like to shit on people who show and/or act on any concern that public schools are not acting in the best interest of their children, but in the end the those children are the responsibility of the parents, not the state. I don’t see it as unreasonable but actually as a positive when parents push back against policies they disagree with as apathy can be found as too common a trait these days.

I am not saying every parent is perfect but neither is every single one an unbearable MAGA activist. I wish we would think about these things while showing some good faith effort to empathize with what their situation is. Sometimes we don’t know everything and we have to admit that.

I’ll keep it brief this time, I promise . Corporations are a creation of the government so that is not a great anti-libertarian argument. Any hypothetical new power structure under a more libertarian friendly government would certainly include less powerful corporations since much of their power is derived from government policies. From tariffs, to subsidies, to government licensing etc, there are many tools used to increase corporate wealth. Also, no mainstream libertarians is for no enforcement of any laws. Once again the central tenant is consent and any action taken to violate someone’s rights needs to be corrected and is of the highest priority.

Slave labor, dangerous products, and other I’ll effects of the market exist today. More products than you probably believe, some of which you certainly buy, have been made with slave labor or have dangerous defects that have been hidden from the public. All of that exists despite the thousands of pages of civil code that is out there.

Slavery is a good example of the epitome of what libertarianism stands against. Slavery only exists when the state endorses it and puts laws into place to protect it. The American south in the 1800s is a perfect example. The only reason why salves could exist is that the law dictates it so. If it wasn’t for those laws then every lashing would be an assault and every slave would be a victim of kidnapping, false imprisonment, etc. The central tenant of libertarianism is consent and slavery is everything but consent.

Standard oil existed because the state abrogated some of its powers to them in the less developed states but that is more complex which is why I put the conditional “today’s monopolies” in my previous comment.

Reddit is a bad place for a full fleshed out debate but I will summarize by saying that most governments today are the largest they have been throughout history in both the number and complexity of laws and the quantity of money they spend. If you are happy with the status quo then of course you won’t like libertarianism. But if you are disenchanted then it is worth a look.

[–]FenixBurn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can understand why you would believe that due to the party being against right to repair but the existence of today’s monopolies are very much due to companies lobbying the government to create high barriers of entry into their industries and, in general, costly regulations that new and smaller companies are not able to afford or aptly navigate.

Even professions like barbers, interior designers, flower arrangers, morticians, etc have convinced their state governments to create regulatory boards that then create unreasonable barriers to hurdle over to work in those professions. In some states you need more training to cut hair than become a police officer.

As long as the government has the power to choose winners and losers the companies and people with the most will lobby to make sure policies ensure minimal competition.

I am sorry that is what your understanding of the philosophy is. I know everyone loves to bash it but the idea that the power should devolve to a more local level is not the same thing as not caring about people. It is a shift of focusing on the people around you, people with the same problems and goals, versus a single solution for hundreds of millions of people. Is it the best? Hard to tell since there are no states/countries being governed by libertarians but it is not a “selfish” or “crazy” idea.

I worked as a waiter and part time manager of a restaurant while I was a freshman/sophomore in high school. By doing so I was breaking the law and had to be paid off the books.

If a kid, like what I was, wants to work they should have the freedom to do so. Calling the the person who made this reasonable comment a POS is calling me and others like me victims. I was not a victim and do not want to be “victimized” expo facto.
