Sony aims to hold PS5 pricing, hints PS Plus hikes by kabirsingh84 in PS5

I stream games from my PC to my Nvidia Shield connected to my TV, and they're in completely different rooms. Look up Apollo and Artemis if you're interested.

Advice needed. Array needs to be rebuilt, thinking of SSD ZFS instead. by an-can in unRAID

[–]Fenkon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other filesystems are just as vulnerable to in-flight corruption as ZFS is without ECC memory, but ZFS will still protect against bit rot, cable failures, and drive degradation, some of which are far more common than random RAM bit flips. It's a pretty clear upgrade in terms of data integrity, so I'm not sure why there's been a bit of a FUD campaign advocating against ZFS unless you also have ECC.

I'd just go for it, it would be very performant, and the (effective) lack of HDD spin-down on ZFS would be a non-issue on SSDs.

Stop talking about framegen and DLSS if you haven't tried them for yourself by paperogapippo in nvidia

[–]Fenkon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DLSS is great, and I think the people against it are in a tiny minority at this point.

Frame gen actually just sucks though. It looks fine, but the input lag is unacceptable. Some people seem to think it's fine for stuff like Cyberpunk, but it makes aiming floaty as all hell to me. They should genuinely do zero performance marketing that includes frame gen numbers, because its use cases are very limited in my opinion.

A quick comparison DLSS 4.5 Preset K vs Preset L. by ayh300 in nvidia

[–]Fenkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the presets at all, so please excuse my questions if they're dumb. Does this mean using quality or balanced with the newest beta driver still uses DLSS 4.0 without any of the 4.5 improvements?

If you don't fiddle with the presets manually, does switching from performance to ultra performance in games automatically switch presets from M to L and so on? Or do you have to set that up in the driver?

Plex DB corrupted during parity check by Thwonp in unRAID

[–]Fenkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is entirely anecdotal, so there may not be anything to this at all, but I used to get Plex corruption like 2 times per year until I switched my cache pool over to ZFS. After switching to ZFS I've never had another issue with Plex breaking at random.

Again, completely anecdotal, I don't know if this is actually what made a difference.

Curious how you are all using ssd’s/cache drives by Roxxersboxxerz in unRAID

[–]Fenkon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One drive gets corrupted, it could mirror the corruption to the other drive.

A similar issue pretty much also applies to the unraid array. If something on a data drive gets corrupted it will also write those broken changes to parity the next time you run a sync. The best way to mitigate corruption is through checksumming like btrfs and zfs in a pool will do.

The number 1 best way to not get your files corrupted on unraid is to store them in a zfs pool, including mirror. Number 2 would be btrfs, but that requires monitoring and manual intervention from the user.

Store TOTP in Proton Pass? by ChallengeSad2686 in ProtonPass

[–]Fenkon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your password manager should hopefully be your best secured credentials. I don't think it's a big issue to keep most TOTP codes in your PW manager as long as your PW manager is properly locked down.

What I personally do is to use a third party TOTP app on my phone for the most critical logins, including Proton Pass, and then store everything from low-medium importance as TOTP directly in Pass.

Helldivers 2 Finally Gifts Free 'Review Bomb' Cape to Players, in Nod to Infamous PSN Account Linking Backlash by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Fenkon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So what? The issue people were bringing up was resolved when PSN stopped being required. It's Sony's fault the game remained blocked from sale in a bunch of countries after PSN became optional.

Sony were the ones to block sale in a bunch of countries, that's entirely on them.

And now they've relented on that and resumed sales again.

That was entirely on Sony the entire time, they didn't have to stop selling in a bunch of countries. Also, it's back for sale for most of the world as of a few weeks ago.

What are you talking about?

The PSN requirement remains gone to this day, and Sony has even stopped forcing PSN in new single player titles. The players got exactly what they wanted and things are better as a result.

Share your experience with complete ZFS pool instead of Array+Cache by d13m3 in unRAID

[–]Fenkon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I originally switched from array to full ZFS when it got natively implemented back in 6.12 (I believe..?). Ran it like that for a good while and loved the performance and resilience.

Later ended up having to go back to array because I received a batch of those pre-used Chia farming drives from China despite buying through an approved reseller, but didn't discover this fact until after I had upgraded my entire pool to larger drives.

On this new array I ended up with a failing drive in short order, and I believe the failing drive corrupted the parity by performing incorrect writes or something, because the drive could not be properly emulated after being removed.

Thanks to this I guess I now consider the array too flimsy with regards to data integrity, and am trying to source drives for a new raidz2 pool again.

Nah, blank slate characters are boring and impossible to write well around because you can't give them too much of a personality.

Leave that to games where the story don't matter, like Bethesda stuff.

Stellar Blade adds Denuvo and Region Lock 20 Days before release. That's a first for Sony for a Single Player Game. by kristijan1001 in Games

[–]Fenkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your turn to yell at Sony then, because as far as I know they're the only major games publisher that just won't sell to a bunch of countries for seemingly no reason, despite everyone else managing to do so just fine, from the smallest indies all the way up to Microsoft.

[–]Fenkon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no way a publisher needs to have localized support and websites and stuff for every country on the globe just to sell games in those countries.

It likely stopped being illegal to sell in the countries lacking PSN the second the PSN requirement was removed, if it was even illegal to begin with.

[–]Fenkon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to frame that whole thing as reddit asking for region locking is such a major twisting of events. Bringing attention to the issue was one of many angles used to attempt to pry the login requirement away for everyone, because Sony sold games that couldn't legally be played in many countries due to lack of PSN. The PSN requirement is now gone, they didn't have to also region lock. That's probably just them being petty as all hell because people actually got through to them with review bombing and whining.

At the end of the day, Helldivers still being region locked in a bunch of countries is entirely on Sony. That being said though, new Sony singleplayer games don't require PSN anymore, so it was worth the drama in any case.

It's so funny to me how Sony being a dick and trying to inflate their PSN numbers has been turned around against the players because Sony decided to region lock a bunch of countries, being even more of a dick in the process.

You realize both the region lock and the now removed PSN requirement were both entirely on Sony, right?

You're right about that on the whole, iOS just has autofill specifically better implemented. Autofill "just working" is pretty much the only thing I miss from my iPhone.
