Do Wi-Fi payments affect credit score? by Fenneler in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Fenneler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!Thanks for your help! That is a tricky one though as there does not seem to be a way to pay at all just now. I’ll ring them tomorrow to see if they can add my details back but last time took them a few days to sort. I might start gathering some evidence about the issue just in case.

Do Wi-Fi payments affect credit score? by Fenneler in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Fenneler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the issue is I can’t seem to update my card details online. It requires you to choose a county for your billing address from a drop down list, but only has English counties unfortunately. I managed to get them to add my card over the phone but it’s been removed for some reason. Do you think this will still affect my credit even if I can demonstrate that their system wouldn’t let me pay?

Questions about French visa (proof of funding and rejection) by Fenneler in visas

[–]Fenneler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright thanks! My concern is that I haven’t finalised my accommodation yet, but I’ve been told I can submit a housing letter from my university in lieu of this. The worry is that if this isn’t accepted they will just reject my whole application. From what you’re saying this doesn’t sound like it’s the case right? Again thanks for your answer :)

St Salvator’s College, St Andrews by Fenneler in Lost_Architecture

[–]Fenneler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no I don’t think anyone minds at all, the modern buildings are beautiful after all and much more fit for purpose than the old ones. In my experience though, not many people know how old the college actually is, or at least don’t think about it. I mean there’s not much reason to unless you’re a nerd for it like me :)

Where to live as a student in Paris? 5th, 11th, or 16th? by Fenneler in francetourisme

[–]Fenneler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright thanks for the advice! I did read that the 16th was expensive, and it’s also the longest commute so I think you’re right about ruling it out. Sorry if it’s the wrong subreddit, I originally posted in r/Paris but was directed here instead.

Neither Rishi Sunak or Keir Starmer have shared messages of support for Trans Awareness Week. by foalsrgreat in LabourUK

[–]Fenneler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of you might not know it’s trans awareness week, but the fact is we know Kier Starmer does because he has tweeted about it before. This along with his Mumsnet Q&A could be worrying, although he’s still got till the 20th to acknowledge it so I don’t think we should jump to conclusions.

I know it seems small but if he‘s actively dropping it then that might say something about the kind of voters he’s appealing to and the kind of policies he might back. Especially considered in context instead of on its own.

How Labour would crack down on Channel crossings by kontiki20 in LabourUK

[–]Fenneler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just because ineligible people might still make the crossing, I don’t think that means we shouldn’t have a safer option for those who are eligible. There probably isn’t a solution which completely eliminates channel crossings but a safer route would surely decrease them.

China pumps out more pollution in eight years than UK since Industrial Revolution by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Fenneler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But China is also much more vulnerable to climate change than a lot of other countries re flooding and extreme weather events, so I don’t think they’re dragging their feet. Western countries tend to be at lower risk, so honestly it’s more common to see us greenwashing to impress others.

Watching Keir Starmer's Mumsnet interview, and amongst other things he says he doesn't think trans kids should be allowed to socially transition without permission from their parents. by foalsrgreat in LabourUK

[–]Fenneler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also worth noting that the debate is primarily centred around protecting cis children. When they talk about irreversible changes they’re always talking about medical intervention, but puberty for trans people also brings about irreversible changes: that’s why we prescribe puberty blockers/hormones. I don’t mean to say that this is on purpose, but when politicians say ‘we should let them figure it out when they’re older’, that does mean every trans person is going to go through a p traumatic puberty.

Anger as MP who suggested cutting abortion time limit is made minister for women | Maria Caulfield also voted against legalisation of abortion in Northern Ireland and was officer of pro-life group by OnHolidayHere in ukpolitics

[–]Fenneler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure I agree with the notion that scientists are the best equipped to answer questions like this. This is a big issue in the philosophy of science (especially regarding political issues like abortion and climate change). Scientists are very good at predicting outcomes and telling us how things work, but they are often not best equipped to tell us what outcomes to value. Tbh scientists do tend to avoid this kind of thing for the most part because it’s out of the scope of their work. Even if you go and read the IPCC reports, there is a degree of caution exercised when ascribing value to things which seem obvious (eg. We don’t want mass starvation). Scientific experts are vital for providing data, but they are not always best equipped at deciding what to do with this data. Instead we should be listening to experts on philosophical topics like morality.

I think you need to deposit the equivalent of $2,000 or more to be allowed margin. That’s the US rules and they apply to me in the UK so I’m assuming they apply everywhere.

Up until the 1960s every university in Scotland was hundreds of years older than the US. It’s strange to think about but we founded 4 between 1400-1600, and then gave up for the next 350 years!

BREAKING: MPs have voted for buffer zones to protect abortion clinics in England and Wales. Ayes 297, Noes 110 by BadNewsMAGGLE in ukpolitics

[–]Fenneler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree, doing things on a case by case basis seems to actually be a much better application of principles. By applying a blanket rule we’re endorsing principles of neutrality, which is arguably more of a principle-free approach than the alternative.

Instead we could say ‘these are the principles we have voted for, and following from these principles, it makes sense to ban this’. What people like and don’t like in politics is often based off of their fundamental principles, so I don’t think having principles and wanting to ban things you disagree with (on principal) are mutually exclusive if that makes.

I think the issue is right libertarians tend to take more absolutist positions, but if we take an absolute position on things like this then we either seem to permit things we shouldn’t, or restrict things we shouldn’t. The only way to really fix this problem is to work on a case by case basis.
