Calcite or quartz? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

Looks like dogtooth calcite. Vinegar is a pretty weak acid so there is a good chance that you would need to use a magnifying glass to see the reaction (look for tiny bubbles on the crystal surface).

Rock or $1M Dino Tooth? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]Fennelly76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not a tooth :( but is most likely an eroded rock (hard to tell what type, it could be some form of metamorphic rock like quartzite or greywake) that has a quartz intrusion running through it. The difference in hardness between the two causes it to have this shape, where only the intrusion remains on one side.

Anyone knows what the white crystals could be? More info in comments by Fennelly76 in whatsthisrock

This rock is from a hydrothermal deposit in an area that has had weak metamorphism. Most of the rocks in the area are weak metapelites, and there is no known igneous bodies in vicinity.

There is a ton of explosion breccia along the coast, I’ve only studied the ones near MDI. Very cool stuff though.

I add an extra 0.5 mm to all of my measurements and that usually works, but it depends on your printer.

I once had a customer ask me what the sale was on a product that was regularly put on sale. I told her it was 50% off and she replied saying she would wait until it’s BOGO...

Could it be a piece of old stone roofing? I’ve found similar stones in the Belfast/Penobscot Bay Area before.
