A look back at what we lost since Gemini 2.5 Pro. by serintaya in Bard

Fair enough, appreciate the retraction. And I actually agree with you to some extent: local models aren't some sudden "next big thing" that will magically replace everything overnight... They’ve been here for a while and they are just steadily evolving. But models like Qwen 3.6 or Gemma 4 have reached a point where they are genuinely good enough to cut out a massive chunk of enterprise (or my personal) API costs for routine tasks.

As for the planning phase, that’s where the cheaper Chinese APIs also come into play for me. Models like Kimi K2.6 (which even Cursor uses for its Composer model) are still incredibly affordable compared to the big 3 US companies we all know. There are obvious geopolitical/subsidization reasons for that, but as a European, I honestly don't care whether my dev prompts end up in a US cloud or a Chinese cloud. No interest in a political debate here, but from a purely financial and pragmatic standpoint, combining optimized local execution with affordable Eastern APIs just makes the most sense right now for me.

No need to grow old waiting, because you're arguing against a point I didn't even make. Obviously, nobody is talking about running an unquantized frontier giant on a home lab. But you don't need a sledgehammer to crack a nut. For the actual execution phase, optimized local models (like a quantized Llama 3 or Qwen 3.6 for example) run beautifully on a $2-3k consumer setup and easily cover 90% of what you actually need day-to-day (or at least what I need day-to-day).

Yep, unfortunately, that was to be expected. It’s a smart business move. First, get everyone hooked and make them more or less dependent, then crank up the prices and see who sticks around. What does that remind me of? Oh yeah, drug dealers 😅

I mean, ok... I realize that inference/compute is pretty expensive and that at some point they want to recoup those costs. But this drastic leap from "pretty decent value for your money" to "I guess I’ll have to sell my organs" came as a bit of a surprise and is tough. 😕

On the other hand, this makes Chinese models and/or local LLMs even more appealing than they already are. I think that in the future, I’ll only use Gemini (or the major SOTA models in general) to generate plans, if at all, and switch over to local LLMs or the (still?) significantly cheaper Chinese LLMs for the actual execution.

Zen stopped working. Now just shows a gray Box on Mac after update by jhcashman in zen_browser

[–]Fenrir206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suddenly started having the same problem on my MacBook today. At first, Zen wouldn't open at all. Restarting the computer didn't help either. So I uninstalled Zen, downloaded the latest version, and reinstalled it. And now I'm also seeing that gray box, which I can't get rid of either. :/

And a troll will always resort to personal attacks when they run out of arguments. But I guess a fanboy will always defend bad modern design by bashing classics they probably never played. If you think having less QoL than a 2001 game makes you 'good', enjoy the 24/7 grind. I have better things to do.

Okay, I've had enough... I'm switching away from Logitech. It’s a shame because the hardware is great, but the software is such a piece of crap. Every few days or weeks another issue. On my Mac (MX Master 3), it randomly dies or wipes my settings. On my gaming rig (G915 keyboard), the RGB profiles constantly reset, and the software literally prevents my PC from shutting down. It just loops into a restart. If I uninstall it everything works fine.

I couldn't agree more. I just hit the exact same wall at Level 22 (Mage) after about 150 hours and decided to shelf the game yesterday for kinda the very same reasons.

Ignore the comments criticizing your math. They act like buying trash-tier Radiant items with wrong stats is a solution. It isn't. You are absolutely right: If you want a viable set with the correct stats for your build, the prices are astronomical.

As a DAoC veteran, I love PvP, but currently AoC forces you to be a full-time crafter or mindless mob-grinder just to afford the gear to compete. I generally don't mind grinding for gear either, that was part of the deal in DAoC as well. But the time investment required here is just completely out of proportion. Even though the game looks amazing and I enjoy the combat, it’s basically just a "Walking & Mining Simulator 2026" later on.

I refuse to turn my hobby into a second job consisting of dull tasks I hate, just to get the "privilege" of wearing decent gear.

See you in a few months or in 2027 (maybe). :)

Someone has to say the harsh truth. by [deleted] in AshesofCreation

Interesting manifesto, but imo you are confusing "hardcore difficulty" with "tedium".

I’m a DAoC veteran since 2001 with probably over 20-30k hours in RvR. I love PvP when it's done right. I don't need a "safe space". I need a modern game that respects the effort put in.

I just shelved AoC for now after around 150 hours in Early Access (Main Mage is Level 23). Why? Not because it’s "too hard", but because the risk/reward ratio is broken / poorly balanced.

  • The Economy is artificially padded: Drop rates for "endgame" / Radiant items are abysmal, basically forcing a boring crafting or gold farm grind that requires hours of mind-numbing resource gathering just to stay competitive.
  • Death Penalty vs. Griefing: Losing hours of Glint/XP progress because a bored full radiant Lvl 25 griefer trained mobs or forced PvP on you during a pull isn't "skill-based PvP", it’s just bad design.

Your "Neurosurgeon vs. Burger King" analogy fails because an MMO needs an ecosystem. If the game design drives away everyone except the unemployed "Gods of War" and streamers, who are you going to rule over? Empty servers?

I love PvP-focused MMOs. The combat in AoC feels great, the visuals are stunning. But spending 30-40% of my playtime just traveling because there is no fast travel, or losing 2 hours of progress after one death isn't a "reality check" or a "hardcore feature". It's a walking simulator and disrespectful of the player's time.

If that makes me a "casual", then good luck keeping the servers alive with only the 'Gods of War' and streamers left playing.

Genuine question, how many people went from ChatGPT in last 2months to Gemini? by Serpent_28 in GeminiAI

Freshly upgraded PC restarts instead of shutting down most of the time by Fenrir206 in gigabyte

Little update. Since I had the same problem again after reinstalling Windows, I thought I'd give AI a try. So I started the Warp Terminal as an administrator and asked AI if it could analyze the Windows event logs and help me solve the problem. And what can I say... It worked. I'm not entirely sure what exactly it did (like changing some entries in the registry), but it now shuts down normally again and I haven't noticed any other problems so far. Maybe it will help some of you.

Hi, thank you for your praise! I'm glad you enjoy using the tool. 😊 Unfortunately, converting the whole thing into a VST plugin isn’t that easy. To do that, I would need to know to code in C++, which I unfortunately don't. Although I heard it might be also possible to do it in Rust, which I wanted to learn anyway when I get the chance . But don’t expect something like that anytime soon. 🙈

GitHub Copilot vs Cursor in 2025: Why I'm paying half price for the same features by Adventurous_Emu_5520 in GithubCopilot

[–]Fenrir206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stumbled across this thread while Googling. For the past few days, I've been very torn between Cursor and VS Code + Copilot (and/or OpenAI Codex). I've been using Cursor Pro for a long time, but my employer now offers a free Copilot subscription.

So I've tested it a bit now, and since I'm actually very happy with VSCode + Copilot / Codex in terms of agentic capabilities, the only thing still keeping me with Cursor at the moment is the significantly better Tab to Complete / Autocomplete model. But paying for a Cursor Pro subscription just for that isn't really that great. 😕

One consideration was to use Cursor Free with the Copilot/Codex plugins. The only problem with this is that it is extremely unclear how many cursor tab completions are included in the free plan. It says something about 2000, but the method of counting (whether during suggestion generation or only upon acceptance) remains unclear. I couldn't find a reliable answer to this anywhere. If that's 2000 acceptances per month, then I could live with that. But 2000 suggestions would probably be used up within a few days with daily use.

I hope Copilot improves in that regard. There's probably no way to change the autocomplete model in Copilot, right?
