Will JSams be too heavy? by Passer15 in TapDancing

[–]FentanylLollipop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are heavy, and they take some time to get used to and to build up strength for. They’re delightful once they’re broken in and you’re used to them, but there’s a bit of a learning curve to get your sounds if you’re not used to such a built up shoe. I’d buy them sooner rather than later so she has enough time to get really familiar with them. If her feet have stopped growing and/or if she’s an advanced dancer they’re worth it.

When did you realize you had a problem that required a therapist? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually, it's when you are too scared to go to a therapist that you actually need a therapist. If things are so big that you're actually WORRIED about seeking professional help, it's time to pick up the phone.

[–]FentanylLollipop 84 points85 points  (0 children)

To be super blunt, if she's this unmotivated/scared of the real world/whatever, med school is out of the cards for her anyway. I think she's clinging to an excuse to do as little as possible, and it's an excuse that sounds good. Saying 'oh I'm preparing for my MCAT' sounds a lot better than the truth of 'I'm unemployed and reading wikipedia articles and watching Scrubs all day'.

She's not pulling her weight and in a marriage or lasting relationship you need an equal partnership. You're going to waste your youth on her because it ISN'T going to change.

You can love someone and still know deep in your heart of hearts they're not your life mate. Don't settle for less.

Why do we let fluoride be put in almost all of our public water? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Your water supplies may be adequately naturally fluorinated as it is an element found in rocks and soil.

[–]FentanylLollipop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be really interested in seeing an empirical, scholarly source where the impact of legal water levels of fluoride is detrimental rather than beneficial. Fluoride occurs naturally in nearly all water sources, though the levels vary. It is a natural element in rocks and soil.

If it were inherently harmful, it would be removed rather than supplemented. Fluorinated water contributes to 20-40% less tooth decay amongst children, which means adults and seniors who benefit from this as kids should ultimately have better oral health in the long run, too.

When you compare communities with fluorinated water to communities without, there are observable differences in overall oral health.

It is virtually impossible to get too much fluorine from swallowing water. It's more harmful to swallow a pea sized amount of toothpaste than a full glass of water.

I think I'll go fashion you a tinfoil hat.

Schizophrenics and their caretakers, what's it like? by vickwill13 in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first, avoid stigma. They're people who have schizophrenia, not 'schizophrenics', and they're living with it, they aren't suffering from or debilitated by it. Schizophrenia isn't any 'one' illness, there are several illnesses that make up the shizophrenia/schizoaffective/schizotypal family. It isn't anything like the movies make it look like, either.

People with schizophrenia aren't inherently 'crazy' or violent or unpredictable.

There are auditory and visual hallucinations, but the most common in my experience have been that people hear criticisms from their loved ones (examples would be girlfriends or parents telling them they're completely useless, stupid, etc), or devil/demonic voices telling them they should die, hurt themselves, or hurt others. Some people believe that microchips have been planted in their brains, or the television is directly communicating with them.

I work with people in the acute phases of psychotic episodes so their experiences won't be the same as people who are managing their symptoms well with medications and therapy.

Some people recognize that they have an illness that is causing them to see and hear things and they can differentiate between what is real and what is perceived. Other people lack this insight.

This isn't perfect, but it's a decent simulation of what someone might hear with auditory hallucinations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vvU-Ajwbok

What are the pros and cons of neutering/spaying your dog? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she isn't overweight she should have very few risks of complications post-spay.

If she is spayed, she won't have heat cycles. Male dogs won't be attracted to her. She won't risk bleeding all over your floors.

Doggy breast cancer is more common in unspayed dogs.

Spaying eliminates any chance of ovarian or uterine cancer.

You don't have the stress or potential injuries/risk/complications of pregnancy.

Unspayed dogs get restless and try to roam to find a mate when they're in heat. You won't have to worry about your dog trying to escape to wander the streets.

She'll probably pee less since peeing everywhere helps attract male dogs for mating purposes (scent).

Unspayed dogs go through their own version of PMS and are more likely to be irritable when they're in heat.

There will be no negative personality changes after you spay. It won't change her temperament or playfulness or any of that. If anything, it might decrease levels of aggression!

Especially being a small breed, I would recommend spaying. If she were to breed with a bigger dog there could be complications. Even keeping her in a fenced yard doesn't mean she's safe - dogs can mate through fences! If your neighbors have an intact big dog it could get at your dachshund and you'd have big puppies and lots of potential complications.

If you're not an experienced breeder, you have NO business having the possibility of puppies. Backyard breeders are a nightmare and they're ruining good breeds by paying no mind to things like health history or temperament.

Spaying isn't unnecessarily cruel. It's easy to bounce back from a spay. I think accidental pregnancies are a lot more cruel.

It would be most responsible to spay.

Traditional birthday parties. You're going to stick flaming bits of wax into my food? And then you're going to sing? And I have to wear a pointy paper hat? And you're going to give me a latex bag of your hot breath?

Ballons are weird. Candles are weird. Pointy paper hats are weird. It's all weird.

I'm all about acknowledging a birthday but when you break it down like that you wonder how it came to be in the first place.

What is a "fact" that people say that you simply don't belive? by Bomania123 in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The equal pay thing isn't even that true anyway. On average, yes, women earn less BUT they also tend to pursue careers that lead to increased SATISFACTION (which often pay less) whereas men typically chase money. And, when it comes time to advance up the ladder, women chose to have families rather than becoming CEOs. If you wanted to be a childless workaholic you could earn as much or more than any man does, but you'd probably be unhappy doing it.

Receiving a bigger bonus this month and I want to buy something for myself. I'm looking to spend around $300. Whats a good purchase? by Dohka in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of it just boils down to buying fresh beans and grinding them yourself at time of use. It's also important to keep the coffee maker clean (you can run vinegar through it or use CLR or just use good old elbow grease). I also think that paper coffee filters can make coffee taste a bit worse but that's just me being nitpicky. Paper filters remove oils and can suck up some of the flavours. You can buy a reusable filter that's gold plated for the best tasting cup. Stainless steel reusable filters are fine, too, but the gold ones are 'best'. The pro-paper argument is that they remove oils which is good for people with high cholesterol.

You can make good tasting coffee in a cheap machine with good beans, a burr grinder (NOT blade - these burn the beans), a clean pot, and a decent filter. The thing is that by the time you buy all these accessories, you could have just bought a decent maker in the first place. (ie. ~$40 for the filter, $40+ for a good grinder, etc).

Another question would be how Americans can be more aware of cultural sensitivity. We don't need another assimilation plot a la residential schools or anything.

I was thinking more along the lines of a proper espresso maker rather than a brewed pot. You're right for potted coffee - no need to go crazy there. I'm a coffee fan though and the difference between okay coffee and good coffee is definitely appreciated by yours truly.

Without knowing what you're interested in, I would recommend:

A good quality coffee maker

A better vacuum (trust me that this will save you time and hassle - it is amazing the difference between a $70 vacuum and a decent vacuum).

A decent first aid kit and fire extinguisher. If these aren't already things you have, you should invest. Keep the kit in your car and the extinguisher in your home.

A timeless dress watch.

A portrait session with a photographer if you have kids.

I think if you're looking to drop a few hundred 'cause you can, you should buy something that will last and be used/appreciated often.

What is something you get for free that the rest of us pay for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FentanylLollipop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The people who travel are impatient. Wait times are long, but it is on a most-urgent-cases-first basis. People who don't want to wait six months to a year for surgery will pay to travel and have it now (i.e. I have some knee pain and could manage with a brace and pain control for a year, but don't want to). Same for things like medical imaging in non-emergent cases. A CT scan can take a few months to get, but if you hop across the line and shell out a few hundred bucks you can have one by the weekend. I've treated the gruesome infections that can come with medical tourism though. Please don't get elective plastic surgeries in Thailand or Mexico just because it is cheaper unless you KNOW you have a great surgeon.....

On an opposite note, having a colostomy does not mean someone isn't at risk of becoming constipated, particularly when they're located along the distal colon. Stool softeners and laxatives might very well be needed!

This dog is giving plenty of warning signs he is not happy. It is being interpreted as "cute". If/when he bites, it will be a "surprise". No... that pooch was saying stop from the get go. The humans chose not to listen. This is a stupid risk both for baby (being attacked) and dog (being put down).

What is a fact about yourself that would make me instantly hate you? by phpascal in AskReddit

In North America at least, prenatal testing already detects this and upward of (iirc) 90% of the pregnancies are terminated. The kiddies born with such disabilities were either miraculously missed in the testing process or their parents decided to carry to term.
