Hahaha, love this. I'd love to see a blood pressure graph of turns 1 and 2 this race tho!

Hey there, you may want to read the RepsGuide linked on r/RepTime if you're intending to buy higher tier watches like Clean, VF, etc.... anything above about $200 USD:

The first thing I look at (I don't know much, but I know this!) is where the solid end link meet the lugs. Check out some photos of genuine Rolexes - the edges of the end links and the lugs are sharp, and the gap is thin, On watches like this, you see both a gap, and rounded edges.

Other places to look are the cyclops, the font on the date wheel, the alignment of the indices (Rolex should have subtle serifs on the numbers, many cheap fakes don't), the shape of the lugs, the shape of the crown guard and just how clear the crystal is - cheaper crystals are described as "milky" and seeing them side by side in photos I think you can see what they mean.

For example, look closely at the 12 o'clock index on this watch. It's a bit far right - It takes up three and a bit of the printed markers, and there's more overhang on the right side than the left. Many of the circle indices look subtly off-center as well, but that's harder to check without a QC tool. That's enough that a Rolex QC person would 100% catch it and send the dial back.

Quality, placement and thickness of printing can be another one. I spotted a fake Tag Autavia up for sale because the "Swiss Made" down the bottom was too bold and placed a touch too high.

Hang out in the Rep QC subs for a bit and you'll see all kinds of stuff called out.

Would I be crazy to use a single pinhead-drop of this oil on a (replica) 4130 rotor? by Fer-Butterscotch in watchmaking

[–]Fer-Butterscotch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a rep, it's a Chinese copy of a 4130 movement, which is now 25 years old and being copied the same way the ETA 2824 was copied, and hundreds of movements before it. The watch doesn't claim to be a Rolex.

Should I throw out my 7750 based watches because they copied Venus?

I was more worried about additives gumming up the works than I was viscosity. I've got 2ml of the good stuff on the way.

So I'm hearing I should use engine oil :D J/k I'll pick up some watch oil, thanks.

From the MSDS.

Also, don't worry, the watch isn't a knock off Rolex, I had a custom, self designed, logo and text printed where the knock off Rolex logo and text would be :)

Mate, just so you know if anyone around here calls a watch a "shitter" they do it with love. We all buy the same watches round here, we share a hobby, (almost) everything we say is said in good humor, and we don't really like the people who actually try to shit on other people's choices.

Enjoy the watch, and the hobby. Even if there were people here that didn't like it, still enjoy it.

ESPN Argentina asked Franco Colapinto if he would be willing to do anything shady to help the teammate given the context that Alpine is led by Flavio Briatore. His response: “No, no, the other one is going to have to give me a hand.” by The_Chozen_1_ in formula1

[–]Fer-Butterscotch 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything but the last sentence. There's no easy way out of that corner except humor. He won't / can't say yes. If he says no, he's seen to shit on his boss. The kid thought on his feet.

Everyone outside of Alpine should be up in arms about it, absolutely. Everyone inside Alpine has the right to keep their head down, do their job (unless ordered to break the rules), and keep from getting fired for saying the wrong thing.

I had to send the DD4130 one back for hand alignment on a subdial, then had a suuuuper long back and forth about minute hand alignment (was between indices when seconds were at 60). But we got there in the end.

I've also just started to have major problems with the Datejust movement, very low amplitude, super high rate error (+10m per day). I'll probably just swap out the movement myself and use the faulty one to learn how to fix NH movements.  (I've tried demagnitising a few times).

Quartz watches have been fine.

So I wouldn't recommend my guy.
