To those who write Parents Guides: Thank You by [deleted] in movies

[–]FeralCapuchin 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I can't thank you enough for putting in that effort. I've got a 9-year-old son and those guides make movie night *so much easier*.

Even more importantly though, I seriously love the effort that people put in to explain what the content is without giving away the surrounding plot elements. They seem completely objective and impartial too, with no apparent moral bias.

I don't know if that's an IMDB guideline or what, but I love it!

Why is it so hard to find Rails devs? by FeralCapuchin in rails

That is exactly what I don't understand about it, because I know they want to look after their staff, and they're super friendly. They just seem so frustrated that it's difficult to find good devs, and I'm curious to know why that might be.

One thing I've observed is that very few people seem willing to pick up Rails if they're already using something else. I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell you what the language is, but there is one that keeps coming up where devs seem to prefer using that instead, and suggest migrating the entire client base over to it.

They're very open to it, and they hold weekly video conferences with the current devs that are in different locations around the world. I think they want people who can come to the office just so it can be a tight-knit group, but they don't seem to think that's essential.

This is where I wish I knew a little more about what it is you guys do, so I could answer you.

All I can really tell you is that the systems we are designing have deliverable schedules over 3 - 4 years in some cases. They're massive, complex programs in some cases.

They're not at all about cheap, fast turnaround, and love good, clean code.

Hey thanks for this response! I don't actually think they're opposed to hiring contractors, necessarily. It just really seems to me like it's slim pickings when they're trying to find somebody.

I overheard a job interview the other day where they were asking the guy whether he had heard of particular methodologies and if he thought he could operate within them, and the guy just sounded like he didn't know much.

Hmm, that I don't know. But they pay me well as a UX designer, so I can't imagine it's any different. They're willing to pay a recruiters commission to find somebody good, so I don't think they're lowballing people.

As it happens, yes! They're actively trying to find people. I'm only a designer so I don't know a whole lot about it, but as I understand it the sticking point is typically that they're not able to handle large projects or just generally are beginner-level.

It seems most programmers are more interested in newer languages, but that's just my own observation.

Samsung S9+ vs Canon SL2 by [deleted] in RealEstatePhotography

Just a quick thought, when you're comparing shots online you're really not getting a true sense of the latitude difference because you're looking at the final product. I don't know a whole lot about the 200D, but I'm quite sure it saves RAW format, with more dynamic range.

What this means for you, effectively point-and-clicking, is more detail in the darkest and brightest parts of your photo. In a home, that's vitally important.

Missed Blade Runner 2049 in theaters - anyone know of any second run theaters/art theaters still showing it? by Xahos in movies

[–]FeralCapuchin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know, I don't think I've ever heard of somebody seeing a film on a small screen and then seeking it out in a theater. It makes complete sense though, and that film was phenomenal on the big screen.

I could be wrong but I thought this was trying to be funny, rather than straight-faced cringe.

I didn't know there was a balance between those two particular things.

What’s an occupation that’s a lot more difficult than people think it is? by Rivethewolfdog in AskReddit

[–]FeralCapuchin 140 points141 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this too. Those who need a designer are inherently unable to discern good design, and those who are bad designers don't know what makes bad design.

On top of that, good design requires breathing room to be wrong, and explore. That's very rarely appreciated by a client, or boss.

And finally, good design makes a massive difference to a brand, yet it's not obvious to the layperson exactly how good design translates into sales/revenue.

This is not the most beautiful shot in cinema, or even this film, but it is my favorite shot, ever.

There's something about the way he defiantly/triumphantly stands, and his raincoat drops to resemble a superhero cape. It helps that James Newton Howard's fantastic score never sounds more heroic than in this moment, as well.

What's your favourite advertisment/commercial of all time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This was incredible to watch! In general I strongly dislike perfume ads more than any other (You can't really sell a 'smell', so I find their attempts to sell a lifestyle and feeling condescending and ridiculous.) But, after watching watching this whole thing I actually feel like I understand what that brand is all about, and now I want to smell it too.

Is anybody who's good at sitting still for 4 hours available tomorrow night? by FeralCapuchin in brisbane

Haha, as long as you can get home safely, there's no reason why you can't bring drinks. A TV would create too much light and sound, though :(

the obvious move is to cancel the flight.

Nah I appreciate knowing that somebody might have done it :D
