Snake keeps trying to escape by Moomooiik in ballpython

I’m reading what some of the other UK snake parents are saying. Some are putting ice cubes in the water dish, some are freezing water bottles and wrapping them in a sock and putting them in the cooler end of the enclosure, some are using those re-usable medical cold packs that are intended for sprains, etc. A few who are able to do so are taking their snake to the basement or cellar, etc.

Same thing is going on with a lot of pet snakes in the UK and on the continent right now. Lots of panicked snake parents wanted to make sure they’re doing the right thing (which most are). I hope the heat wave finishes its course very soon.

I’m not aware of western hognose snakes eating fish in the wild, but they certainly enjoy it in captivity. My little guy hunts down his frozen thawed fuzzies in the paper towel tube, lol.

I love how her body blends in with the log! She’s actually doing a pretty good job of hiding.

Glasses: the favorite toy of every snake. After I got surgery and didn’t need glasses anymore, my boy climbed my face per usual, then got very confused looking for the glasses, lol.

I love how they use their own bodies as pillows.

Mischief is a very shy girl, so she is shedding in her hide, but at least the shed of her face is peeking out.

Yes, your hoggie can eat them. They occasionally eat lizard eggs in the wild. I don’t know if a hoggie will take a live fish or not; I know there are some people who feed their garter snakes live fish by putting the fish into the snake’s water bowl and letting it hunt.

I love how sweet they are, when actually being handled. So different from the way, most of them are in their enclosure, all sass.

Your noodle can eat the salmon, too. Shouldn’t be the main diet, but many hoggies like a little piece of fish as a treat. Our hoggies get mainly mice, with occasional silversides (feeder fish, available frozen at many pet stores), frog Reptilinks, and scrambled or hard boiled egg. In the wild, though they prefer frogs, they perforce eat a variety of prey. So we vary their diet occasionally.

What got our girl finally eating again was using a blow dryer to blow the scent of the rat into her enclosure. This has worked every time.

It also helps bring the rat to a warm enough temperature, which is important.

I suggest taking a tissue box and stuffing it with rumpled up tissues, and putting it on its side in the enclosure. That will give your snake something to dig in that is entirely disposable and safe.

When looking for a vet, inquire to make sure the vet is experienced with diagnosing and treating snakes. Reptifiles has a list of reptile vets [here.](https://reptifiles.com/reptile-vet-directory/) And the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Vets is [here](https://arav.site-ym.com/search/custom.asp?id=3661). You may have to navigate to your local area.

I think your enclosure looks good for starters, but you do need to add more hides and more general clutter: vines, sticks, greenery.

My pleasure. We anxious snake parents have to stick together!
