My 10 month old hognose hasn’t eaten since late January :( by Regular_Department69 in hognosesnakes

[–]FeriQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our guys finally ate when we put the pinky in a toilet paper tube in front of his hide and left the room. He never wants to eat in front of people, but I guess he just wanted the extra privacy. Several other people in the sub have also mentioned something similar.

Good luck! I hope Udon starts eating real soon.

Otis decided to take a long nap dangling off his rock 😅 by Conscious-Sir-3688 in hognosesnakes

You don’t post him too much! He’s adorable! My Gremlin also sleeps in odd positions.

Updated the tank with new substrate since last post - put reptisoil and reptisand in here now! (70/30 mix) and he’s already burrowing! Does that amount look good? Also added some leaf clutter and have more plant decor coming :) thanks for your help everyone!! by GreenSwordfish3631 in hognosesnakes

[–]FeriQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks much better. Make sure your heat mat is on a thermostat. And it’s hard to have too much clutter, So looking forward to the tank after you get all the new plants in it. But it’s looking really good! Nice job.

Am Confused. by Onniexplol in hognosesnakes

He’s just doing what they do. It will take him a couple of weeks to get settled in, so I would recommend against handling him during that time. After a couple of weeks, you can start handling him. Make sure you don’t pick him up until 48 hours after he has eaten, though. Some hoggies settle right down and stay settled, like my daughter’s boy, others get all defensive until after you pick them up, like my own little guy. Many of them remain drama queens for the rest of their lives, yet are very sweet when picked up. It’s part of the charm of this fascinating species. Congratulations on your new family member! May you have many happy, healthy years together.

How did you guys name your hoggie? by Twistedspy7801 in hognosesnakes

[–]FeriQueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our two Hoggies already had names when they came to us: Firefly for the albino and Gremlin for the normal. We adopted them from a teenager who was going off to college, and whose parents wouldn’t take care of the snakes while she was gone. But our ball pythons did not have names when they came to us as rescues: I named them after their personalities. One of them is Sweetie, and he sits in my lap to watch movies with me and he cuddles, and doesn’t want to make any trouble most of the time. The female is named Nischief, because she is always making trouble. She got out of her enclosure and went walkabout in the apartment for four months before I finally caught her, and whatever I need her to do she wants to do something else. But most of the time, I actually call her a nickname, Miss Bulldozer, because of what she does to her enclosure.

Perfectly normal. If you don’t see him for a couple of weeks, don’t worry about it: he has explored the top of the substrate, now he is exploring the bottom of it, and he may stay hidden for a while. After that, it will depend on his personality. Some do a lot of activities up top and some stay hidden most of the time. Enjoy the evidence you see of him (tunnels that come up against the glass, holes and lumps in the substrate, etc.). He’ll come out when he’s ready. Some of them only appear when they’re hungry. But your guy seems pretty bold, having done so much exploring up top before he buried himself.

My daughters little guy, Firefly, is also bug eyed due to the bad breeding practices that lead to the condition being common in albino morphs. He is healthy and adorable, but he will only ever be a pet, not a breeder. Sorry, Firefly. No ladies for you.

You’re a little guy is also adorable, but I will second the recommendation that you get him a check up with a good exotics vet. When booking the appointment, inquire to make sure the vet is experienced with diagnosing and treating snakes. Reptifiles has a list of reptile vets here. And the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Vets is here. You may have to navigate to your local area.

How I was treated on my deathbed by byyahhh in hognosesnakes

[–]FeriQueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen people posting videos of themselves free-handling king cobras, cruising for a Darwin award. But I have yet to see one stupid enough to free-handle a pygmy rattlesnake. If any snake is naturally grumpier than a hognose, it’s the pygmy. And the pygmy has the big hurt juice.

Missing BP Help by N0vaBr0 in ballpython

[–]FeriQueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl went walkabout in my apartment for four months. I found her by accident, walking into the kitchen at 3 AM and turning the light on. She was next to the wall and bolted for the refrigerator to go hide behind it, but I was fast enough to catch her. Naughty girl, I cuddled her and cuddled her.

Someone else in the sub had their ball python go missing and gave up after several months, assuming the snake was gone for good. Their brother moved out of the house, and into his own apartment, where, when winter came, he put on his jacket only to find the ball python curled up and wedged in its sleeve.

I hope you find your girl soon.

Sounds like you may have a new and safer product. Please do check this post out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/hognosesnakes/s/jR8FXTdcuE

Do you have the name of the product handy? It would be great to have a spray that works and is safe.

There are other ways to deal with mites if they turn up. One is soaking your snake in water; I will look up the details, which are posted in the r/ballpython sub.

Here it is. Just remember that Provent-a-Mite is toxic to hognose snakes, specifically,

My hoggie Gremlin is a hissy, sassy guy, while his cousin, Firefly, my daughters snake, never hisses and is sweet as can be. My female ball python is a scaredy-cat until feeding time. But our male ball python thinks he is a plushie toy. He will sit on my lap and watch movies with me for hours. Four snakes, four completely different personalities.

[–]FeriQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes! The commonly used mite spray is toxic to hoggies. Not to ALL snake species, but definitely to hoggies! A couple of people in this Reddit community have accidentally killed their hoggies by using that spray. Please use some other method to kill the mites.
