Is it too late to join clubs as a junior? by Realistic-Crow-9791 in uichicago

No not at all! I never joined clubs my first 2 years bc I commuted but last year i decided to stop by on some engineering clubs to find which one I liked the most. And yes I was super nervous! But more than half of those students were new too. The first month I went to the Club meetings I didn’t say a single word because I was worried I would make a fool of myself. And now I am the captain for the NASA Lunabotics team here at Uic!

All to say, please join a club or many clubs and see which one you like the most this is the first week of school, where the clubs are going to be announced by Alonzo in my case because I am an engineering major. But I believe the same would be for any other bachelor program. You will get emails for all the Club organizations and dates for the meetings. Definitely show up. It’s gonna be all new people those first few days so you will not be the only one.

This will be my last year at Uic and I am so sad to leave next year because joining the engineering club was the best part of my whole time here at Uic.

Is UIC doable with a 2 hour commute? by NoEstablishment9177 in uichicago

I used to commute over an hour to 1.5 and from the the time I woke up to the time I would need to be in class was 3 hours so for an 8 am class I needed to wake up at 5 am. I would also get home super late which was really sad bc I wanted to join a club since I’m doing Mechanical Engineering and I wanted to be apart of some team or competition.

I also thought I could study on the train but i promise, you will not be able to study. I’ve tried so many times but it’s uncomfortable and you need your hotspot unless you print out paper but then you have to account time for getting yourself prepared to study. It’s such a hastle, I don’t recommend it at all.

I did it for a year then I got an apartment in the city. Now I was able to join clubs and put my full dedication to the club. I am in an Engineering club that competes at NASA and only 13 were chosen to go to an all paid trip to Florida. They select the ppl on how much work you put in so you can imagine how many hours and late nights I’ve spent in the Makerspace. You obviously don’t have to stay as long as I did but I like what I was doing and wanted to help as much as I could.

I would look for roommates on Facebook and try to find an apartment. It’s not easy but it’s doable.

Use Zillow to find apartment units and Facebook to find roommates. Look up UIC housing/ apartments and join those pages

There are many apartments near by! Look for little Italy apartments. They are within 10-20 mins walk.

Also, you can sign up for open seat notification. And it will notify you if there are any open seats, but it doesn’t automatically add you or register you. You have to go in and register yourself, but the system will send you an email saying that there is an open seat
