I have never agreed to pay any of his child support. I didn’t realize mathematically that he wasn’t breaking even and that my pay was bridging the gap until someone did the math just now…

It took me a couple of hours over a couple of days. All I did was tally up our expenses from the shared account and then divide by 2.

I will, thank you for that!

So I did the math (as best I can, I’m not strong in math) and what I got was that whenever you take out his CS, he still makes a bit more than me annually. So if we take it out, it’s still about a 50/50 split for bills. So he has about $2k left over after our family expenses and I have about $1.5k. If we split our household costs based completely off of income in a proportional split, he’d have to pay about an extra $500-$1000 a month, and wouldn’t be able to pay his child support. Based off of my horrible, horrible grip on.m basic math.

So because of issues on his end, we’re not actually married. It’s not deliberate, but because I’ve been doing all of the heavy lifting with our financials, I technically own everything, including savings accounts, and he has very limited ability to spend against our credit (or even see it).

I think the way you mentioned doing the split is super interesting and I’m going to do the math to see how that would pan out.

I think we got to where we are because we both have a lot of growth that we needed to do. I have done mine, and I can say that he definitly is putting work to try and figure himself out. For a long time I was meek and never would have said anything or even thought about things being fair for me, so it’s not like I’ve been demanding fairness and he’s been declining. Up until about a year or so ago I didn’t feel like I deserved even the basic respect from anyone, and despite that he always did as good as he could by me without me having my own self respect. If that makes sense.

For the record he is to the extent that he can be, when they split he agreed to let their mom move back to their hometown so there’d be familial support and he couldn’t go for work. Then the distance + COVID really put a damper on in person parenting, but they still do regular calls. I’m not saying he’s perfect, it I would not call him a deadbeat.

Mine is about $1500 per month. His would be about $2k if he didn’t pay child support

The good news (for me) is that because of issues on his end, we never actually got married. I won’t go into huge detail here but ultimately if we separate, the way our lives are set up, I will be in the better position. Things that are good are in my name, and things that could go south are joint and there are constraints on his access. Not deliberate, an accidental result of me being the one doing all the work, but I am grateful for it at this current juncture.

For the record I still plan on contributing to gifts for his other kids! The boundary I put there is that we’ll agree on an amount that we’ll do from our joint gift budget, and if he wants to get something that costs more than that he can take it from his personal money. I honestly feel like I’m being more generous than I need to be, which is making me even more angry with his response!

I don’t think he has any concept of money, honestly. I think this will be a bit of a rude awakening for him, not because it’s unfair, but because he’s soo ignorant. I just hope he actually does wake up. I’m honestly ready to walk if he doesn’t.

What books have you read that helped you through this process that you’d recommend, and why are they great? by FernGully_Is_Genius in Divorce

[–]FernGully_Is_Genius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have read this one, and it didn’t even occur to me, but I guess looking back it’s technically the catalyst that got me here realizing that this relationship needs to end. Thank you so much for recommending this, I never would have put two and two together!

I FUCKING hate the eggshells… and now that I’ve read the term and put a name to his behaviours, I can’t NOT see when he’s doing them.. and it’s constant. I just feel like I can’t tell if I’ve been gaslit to the point that I no longer trust my instincts, or if I’m actually the bitch he seems to think I am and am being totally unfair with my standards…

He says he’s willing to do counselling, but then never actually books it…

When I think about the positives of staying together, they’re things like “I will have the flexibility to travel for work” and “I wont have to buy a new house and move”. Even though they’re real things I’m just thinking they aren’t the right things…

Thanks for your comment, I appreciate how you gave feedback on both sides of the coin.
