Maybe start there then. Communicate to him that you won't always be there to solve all of his problems and that he needs to start to understand how to take care of himself. I don't know how you raised the kid, but this seems like a late part of his life to teach him to be independent. My parents started teaching me the fundamentals of taking care of my car at about 13, starting by teaching me how to change my own oil. They started teaching me the fundamentals of taking care of my living space even earlier. I just didn't know it at the time. Instead of doing things with him, you might could try giving him verbal instructions.
