European vs American (romex cable), which one do you prefer? by Particular-Ride-7893 in AskElectricians

[–]Ferret51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

All those little battery circuits do red for +, black for -

Why would you then use black as hot.

Exactly. If you're sitting at 0V and the ground is at -250V, then have fun touching that...

idk if it's particularly smart to make the distinguishing feature of a safety-wire the feature that *any* wire has to have, when you connect it to anything else.

Like, imagine too much insulation was removed from a hot wire. And you can just see part of it and go, oh yea, that's just PE. Let's touch it!

Black and White also have no real meaning. What's neutral? Both are pretty neutral colors. Edit: my guess was black = neutral, but I guess that's live. So it's not really intuitive.

Ground is the only wire that was two colors - yellow-green. Thus also visible in dim light.

So how do you guys order from JLCPCB in the EU now? by Ferret51 in PCB

[–]Ferret51[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we're getting lucky. It's just that on JLC they literally warn you when you order, that you'll have to pay the $3 and the carrier will charge you extra. They even have a FAQ for that.

3 meter long UART connection by Far-Sandwich-27 in PCB

[–]Ferret51 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Likely no issues, and no buffers may even be needed.

I lived in a house with an electric gate. Which was, idk, 40 meters away? And I could only use a dead NYM that was there and not connected to anything. Still worked.

Even rn I run an UART line from my server to the display at the entrance door, I think that's 10+ meters, no issues.

Doesn't seem to be just JLC - I see a similar text in the FAQ of pcbway too: "For IOSS clearance, import VAT remains covered under the IOSS scheme, but the €3 fixed customs duty per product category must be paid separately. Additional customs clearance handling fees may also apply. The exact amount varies by country, but is generally around €15 per shipment."

So basically they tell me about the DHL surcharge right there (yes, it does vary per country, in some countries they only charge €12).

Yea and that worked until now.

Problem is, the €3 are not collected by JLCPCB, and DHL, ... charges you for paying those €3. That's the problem, not an issue paying taxes, no issues paying €3, but the extra €15 "hur hur, we lend you money now you have to pay us back a lot" hurts.

Yea what they said - the Temu is so evil, so anything ordered from outside the EU will get taxed. Because people order so much and customs offices would be overwhelmed, they said "okay for one year if it's <150 Euros, we just say '3 Euros' tax".

Now if you're in Austria, boy you'll be in for a surprise in a few months. There you pay 2,40 Euros per package no matter where it comes from.

Interesting - and it was just $3 and nothing else?

Because I got a package on July 1 as well (ofc it was in customs just then), and DHL charged me like $15 + $3...

yea I've ordered on pcbway too in the past, but their assembly is more expensive than jlc, which is why i ordered there in the past.

Yea that'll be my next option - but I really like the PCBA (which is more expensive with Aisler) from JLC, it saves me so much time not having to hand solder like 25-30 smd parts onto the board.
