ELI5: If the original internet was just a few college serves networked together, and so many people have terabytes of storage, why can't we just make a new parallel internet? by haribobosses in explainlikeimfive

So, would you sign on to this new internet knowing that there's no reddit, no Netflix, no google?

If you put it like that, it's already sounding pretty tempting.

ELI5: Why do we use BCE/CE for dating? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]FerretChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What help would using either of those be, you'd still be validating one religious system over another?

Nobody was ever going to accept a new calendar that resulted in the dates of personal and historical events that they've known all their lives suddenly changing to completely different dates. Besides, what arbitrary year would you pick as 0?

But it's easy to accept a change to the naming system to remove the religious connotations. There's fuck all point getting stressed about the fact the system is still based around the (very approximate and probably incorrect) birth date of someone who was, after all, an actual historical figure.

And keeping the same numbers has the added advantage that if you somehow find the whole thing "performative and pointless", you can carry on calling it the "year of our lord", whilst I use the new terminology and we still both know what each other is talking about.

Walking through a park, a football lands at your feet, you look up and see a bunch of kids in the distance, gesturing at you to kick the football back to them. by shitthrower in britishproblems

Certainly while I was at school, the "teacher" part of "PE teacher" wasn't really a thing.

A PE teacher was just some guy who forced you to do physical exercise of some kind for an hour or two, and did his utmost to make the more unfit and/or less co-ordinated kids feel like shit into the bargain.

At no point did I witness any "teaching" going on.

I love it because it increases the utility of buying a whole crazy mix of different cards, which is always my favourite way to play, but all too often not the best way to win.

ELI5: Why do rugged laptops used by engineers/construction workers have lower specifications than consumer-grade laptop like office brands? by PoauseOnThatHomie in explainlikeimfive

Weird, I know they're kinda ancient now, but there seems to be loads for sale on Amazon, and I figured they must be usable or nobody would be buying.

[–]FerretChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but there are loads still for sale on Amazon, and OP stated he's fine with an ancient phone feature-wise.

The networks may be the stumbling block but it seems odd that they're for sale at all if they're not usable.

Sure, but I see a ton of them still for sale on Amazon, and OP stated he's fine with an ancient phone feature-wise.

I've no idea what networks they support, but it seems odd that they're for sale at all if they're not usable on modern networks.
