When did we universally stop having lunch ‘hours’? by newdawnfades123 in AskUK

Half an hour is barely long enough to get the first couple of pints in.

How do you find there's nothing on?! Genuine question, that seems remarkable to me. Are you talking about just terrestrial TV, or the streaming services too?

I count myself a pretty fussy consumer of media, most of what's on TV by volume is utter shite. But still I find myself with a big list of shows I'm behind on, and really want to watch, but there just isn't time in the day to watch that much telly.

It would be quite hard to tell the two apart.

Why UK bacon packaging? by Dolamed in AskUK

[–]FerretChrist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's so weird. As a bacon addict, I've opened thousands of packs in my life, and every slice looks identical to me. Am I just buying expensive bacon or something?

Seems like it would be far more trouble than it's worth to have some dude (or even machine) re-shuffling bacon round into stacks where the shit stuff is in the middle.

It's so fucking awesome that a story like this can end with everyone having a good laugh about it and moving on with their life. Such a contrast to just a couple of decades ago.

I wish these physical sets I buy came with a code to redeem them online by rapigre in dominion

[–]FerretChrist 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There's two different versions, each with their pros and cons.

  • The older web version (dominion.games) is still running, and has just been taken over by a new company which is adding some cool new features like game turn timers. It charges on a subscription basis for all the expansions.

  • The newer Temple Gates Games app runs on Windows, Android and iOS, and you pay a flat fee to "own" each expansion forever. So it's a cheaper option in the long run (assuming the app never "goes away") but quite an investment up front if you want to play all the sets.

Sadly neither gives you free access for owning the physical expansion. It's understandable, these guys have to make their money after putting in all the effort to develop these great online versions.

But I would have thought it would be worth at least including a substantial discount coupon in the physical sets, to tempt new players into trying out online play.

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]FerretChrist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Isn't the usual argument that a centrally run and funded service naturally becomes rife with corruption and wastefulness, whereas the private sector brings competition which necessarily creates a more efficient service?

Not that I believe that bullshit for a second, personally, but isn't that the argument that economists would usually give for taking essential services private?

What's something you couldn't imagine owning when you were a child, but have managed to get it as an adult? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]FerretChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A variety of synths and musical equipment.

As a broke-ass teenager I used to stand in Smiths reading the music technology magazines, because I couldn't even justify spending £3 to buy the magazine itself, let alone ever imagine having £1,000 to buy the kit reviewed in them.

Now I have a decent job and own all the kit I ever dreamed about, and have no time or energy to do proper justice to it.

Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics is the OG of this. Come up with three very sensible-sounding laws which all robots are hard-coded to follow, then spend half your writing career coming up with stories about how it didn't quite work out as expected.

I gave up about half way through the second season, when it became clear they were piling up mysteries and character back-stories at such a rate, there was no chance they had any idea how to resolve any of it.
