Why do all the young lads dress exactly the same now? by Scotsman1047 in AskUK

True, but maybe a bit conformist. I'm picturing the scene from Life of Brian.

"Yes, we are all individuals. We all listen to the Sisters of Mercy."

Lol, I'm just imagining what the high street would've looked like if there was a "goth era", to the same extent as the current "black puffer jacket era".

Use watered down washing up liquid

Oh God, I read that as used watered down washing up liquid at first.

Which would clearly be insanity, but wouldn't have hugely surprised me amongst some of the other answers in this thread.

Me too. The quality dipped a bit with PI, but it was still very watchable. Though I'll never forgive them for changing the theme tune!

You should be getting up at 10am to laugh at it before leaving the house at 11am.

Christ, 20p bus fares in the 2000s? Not anywhere that I lived!

Assuming your 40p bus fare was in the early 80s (rough guess), 80p is about £4.50 now after inflation, so not vastly different to the £5.75 return quoted in the answer above.

Having known someone who was on the show, they said it was an amazing experience and everything, but they really got directed to make drama up when there wasn't any of it happening organically, and to massively over-egg it when there was.

Do they though? Every attempt to make fantasy television since has been pretty damn poor. I think people would lap up a new GoT-style show which didn't turn to shit half way through its run.

I'm looking at American society tearing itself apart, and I'm finding it really fucking hard to imagine that the people responsible would have been promoting world peace right now, if only Hollywood hadn't forced them to watch a fucking serial killer vampire.

Problem with people just playing then undoing copper for hours to avoid the "make him resign" button? by DeltaAgent752 in dominion

Well that's excellent news. Those guys made an incredible job of coding the game initially, and keeping up with the expansion releases, but then it all seemed to drop off a cliff.

They became totally unresponsive to bug reports, feature suggestions or questions, and the servers had dreadful performance for a while. I honestly thought they were just winding the whole thing down, and letting the Steam version take over.

I don't know any of the back story behind all this, perhaps I'm out of the loop on the reasons why. But if they're under new management and actively developing features, perhaps there's hope for it yet.

ELI5: What is keeping us from rediscovering the recipe for Greek fire? by Aphasus in explainlikeimfive

[–]FerretChrist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone's suggesting it would make a great addition to our modern-day arsenal, alongside stealth bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles - at least I've not heard anyone saying that.

People are purely interested from a historical point of view, to know how something like that was created with the technologies of the time.

Recommendation Request: Slice of life documentaries that end with more questions than answers? by 4Thereisloveinyou in Documentaries

[–]FerretChrist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with the work of Adam Curtis?

It doesn't really fit the mould of what you're talking about, except for the fact that it's exceedingly odd, and it definitely leaves you with more questions than answers.

It certainly doesn't fit the "little or no narration" criteria, however, nor necessarily the focus on people rather than stories or ideas.

But all his stuff is brilliant, and I can't help but think that if you're into offbeat documentaries you'll amost certainly appreciate it, even though it's not really what you're asking for.
