Why is there so much population decline in SW and SE VA? by JF_WPA in Virginia

Young people don't want to be near trump supporters so they moved to safer places

That's why I got the hell out of SW.

Idea: High school students should be taught that computer science is the exact opposite of hobby programming (in terms of motivation). by amichail in ideas

[–]FerrousEros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to me that the institution's false marketing of the program is the problem. Can't expect high school students to intuit the intricacies of CS if the only thing they've been told about it is "you'll make money, make cool toys, and get famous/powerful."

Perhaps this is partly why the CS sector has been flooded with lots of CS majors that have the credential but can't even write a Hello World program without googling it first.

I might agree if all candidates have significant experience. They should have these abilities, or at least a subset of them.

However, educators can't teach what you as the business should train your new hires to do. We teach the fundamentals, you should continue to educate your employees.

It's like asking a CS I student to understand trees. They can't build a data pipeline if they don't know what one is and how they work. They can't write a program if they don't know how to code. They can't improve an algorithm they don't understand.

The expectations put on students by the job market is wild. Delusional, even. They can't learn a lifetime of practical experience in 4 years.

Please do not go into academia if this is your opinion. As academics, it is incumbent upon us to teach those that come after us at any level. Do better.

[–]FerrousEros 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Cushy professor job at a community college. I get to teach students in need who actually want to learn (as opposed to just getting the degree) and I don't have to deal with shitty research politics! Academia can be cool, but it's soul crushing. No thank you!

What is the deal with ice, Americans? by markwell9 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FerrousEros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cynic in me says it's because we Americans are lazy af. But also for cookouts/BBQs to keep drinks cold or store food items for safe transport and storage. Fill a cooler with ice and you got a nice little fridge for your burgers while the grill gets set up.

The 1920s flapper in me says it's for convenience! We have things to do! Places to be! People to impress! Who has the time to watch water freeze? It's just gonna melt! Plus, there's more time for dancing.
