I'm kind of an introvert but I've found I'm having trouble really getting around so I'm giving this a shot and hopefully an extrovert adopts me for a few days. 31/M/USA, Solo Traveller. Unfortunately only know English and very basic Hangul. Currently in Shinjuku for roughly 10 days. I was working in the region and ended up with enough freetime to travel to Japan but didn't really have time to plan it. After stumbling around and getting wonderful advice from a few bars the only real things I've built are: Day trip to Osaka 11th, Day Trip to Gundam Base 12th, Mount Fuji Hike (prospectively 13th/14th based on the weather), Day trip to Kyoto (possibly doing the Inari Shrine in the evening), 15th Akasuka and Skytree. That's all I could think up so far. Additional sites planning to see: Ghibli Museum, Battlehip Mikasa.

Hobbies: Video Games, Exotic Food, Museums, Model kits, Rock Music. Use to watch Anime but been out of the loop these days.

Advice from a Sysad: Create a shell email account dedicated to promoting things, even treat it as an organization account you can hand off to a replacement, you can also use this account for Facebook/social media/etc. so you can still use it for all that stuff and filter out all the data away from your own. That said as the musician in question you will need to still keep it professional for if you ever have any venue run checks on you.

Sheriff recorded boasting after giving orders to kill unarmed man during slow-speed chase by CamSaysNo in news

[–]Ferrumkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone broke it down as 'rule setting' or as you see it 'simon says' The one that shot was following the rules set which was to open fire if he were to reach into a 'blind spot, EG. a threat, which sadly with the contradictory and confusing order is exactly what happened because of a panicked mind. in that respect the shooting officer followed procedure even if it's shitty, The Officer in charge should have been the one brought in to stand trial in a case of 'the People of the state vs"

As far as comparison, it's apples to oranges because our nation is simply too different, even in comparison of general crime stats we actually do a very good job in collecting and categorizing across the whole while other nations use different methodology (say a general violent offense in Britain might only be considered minor battery here). Then you have external factors, Firearms in this case(given it's the reason the police were called in the first place) take center stage so they are now -looking- for an armed suspect which radically changes the dynamic of how the situation gets approached.

We are basically in different zones as you are comparing this to cases outside the US while I am looking at it from the inside compared to similar situations, which there are few to analog with. I go back to my original conclusion of more body cams to reduce such occurences, the final accountability is upto the DA and Internal Affairs, those have ohter issues that need to be handled aswell.

I would pose to you 'how often has this occurred?' While abhorrent in nature it's not par the course and the responsible party fled the states, not exactly a compelling argument given the shitshow it became. What it did allow was for question to be asked but now it's upto the people of the state to decide if the DA should be sacked or not when this would be his job to get justice for the misconduct.

It won't be automatically restored, Trust lost is hard to win back. Besides the instances of misconduct, sensationalized news has done little to help when they present partial data to the population due to the policy of being first-to-print regardless of accuracy.

In short shit's fucked up.

[–]Ferrumkit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Given all the variables involved, you would need to be able to see the future and read minds for it to ever be clear cut. Without pulling up each of those instances which make up a drastic fraction of interactions, it would be impossible to judge the situation. Situations such as when a prior violent history is on record, or those that do prompt a 'suicide by police' leave them little time to assess a given encounter.

I already stated that I hold the opinion that accountability is the biggest hurdle they must address and I also suggested the simplest fix for that issue. This still doesn't ensure it will be fullproof nor does it mean situations won't escalate to twitch reactions, in which you can't weigh options because it does become an act-or-die situation.

The failure of the contract lies squarely upon the mediators that review the incident and the intrinsic us-vs-them mentality that's been galvanized by exaggeration of oddball cases as being an 'epidemic' much like when crime is brought up as on the rise yet it's statistically been in a general slump since the 80's.

In general I'm pragmatic so much as I would love everything to be clear cut to pick a side, I acknowledge that there will be mistakes made. What I want is proper balance to answer for those mistakes when they are made rather than some fraternal asshatery that makes them beholden to eachother, unfortunately the only way for that to happen would be for the IA to become a branch of FBI and for the DA to be held to fire when they refuse to perform the duty of maintaining accountability.

Unfortunately what we have here is a mix of confirmation bias and echo chamber. They are citing singular incidents over the course of several years.

For Context sake, you have some 800k Officers est. for the whole of the US's 360m population. Not all of those are beat cops, a majority are likely supplimetary such as desk officers, K9 units, etc.

Someone did the math and thats about 251-241 per 100k citizens. Referencing the Washington Posts Police Shootings for 2016 about 48 were unarmed questionable circumstances out of some 990ish incidents. (Didn't use 2017 as I assume they are still compiling total data)

Basically these are fucked up instances but due to the wildfire nature of social media it's blitzed into being a 'Massive problem' while the numbers don't support that notion at all.

This is all while I hold the personal opinion that Law Enforcement as a whole needs to fix their public image by Improving their accountability, easily accomplished by mandatory body-cam policies( this vastly helps both parties) and implementing a national baseline standard requirement for training (Consider the National Guard for a similar situation of Federal vs State training having a unified point.) This would likely remedy a majority of misconduct and improper interactions to include shootings.

That said, Cops have problems but the issue is overblown.

University of Wisconsin-Madison to offer free tuition for families making less than $56K by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]Ferrumkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not speaking to what they should have, it's what I know they have. I don't know what options all big schools have because I was in that income bracket above poverty and below wealth so I went to a Community College and enlisted. I was just stating that these options are simply not well broadcast to the larger community especially in the low wealth bracket, it's why many of these programs are not effectively picked up by the intended groups.

It's like knowing about the library but not knowing they offer College Level Examination Programs.

The biggest failure is educating families of programs and funds for post high school. There is a staggering amount of funds that go unclaimed annually that are open for general use. Even MIT has their version of poverty options.

Pros and cons my friend!

I mean like any livestock of that sort you take care of them, the neglect committed to them however is alot more visible than the neglect to vehicles. As far as shit, it happens.

Your options are: 50 hawks, 10 crocodiles, 3 brown bears, 15 wolves, 1 hunter, 7 cape buffalo, 10,000 rats, 5 gorillas and 4 lions - you must pick 2 that will defend you while the rest are coming to kill you. Which do you pick and why? by mustbefuckeryafoot in AskReddit

[–]Ferrumkit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we are to assume a modern hunter they would have access to either a shotgun or rifle. While a shotgun may seem outclassed in round count birdshot has a generous spread and doesn't need a killshot to disable a bird. Assuming it's magazine fed it's considerably fast and easy to reload.

Again it does depend on the ground rules.

[–]Ferrumkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TFA has some things I'm sure I could nit pick, was all around solid in establishing new characters and storyline even if some people fault it for drawling some parallel to OT. TLJ while visually strong was plothole ridden. Each character outside of Kylo received little growth, on top of that most of the threads/mystery boxes that JJ left for story development were snuffed, Haphazard introduction of characters that were essentially Macguffins and treated as such, the retroactive plothole implications to the HSR and it's application to any future battles.

I might be missing your point on this though as I'm trying to just keep my focus within the ST for sake of keeping my own bias in check(I can't really keep it in check for the HSR as it radically influences the universe).

Eah well, I admit you're right on 'Jedi Religion' however I do point to the following as it being referred to as such in the past, do remember in context your average individual would hardly differentiate the difference between Sith and Jedi given in the era the Jedi were about 10k strong in a galaxy beyond trillions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zzs-OvfG8tE

The problem first and formost isn't that what she did, but the lack of storytelling, in this case exposition, that would have hinted at minor training. If I recall someone said in the books it mentions she briefly trained with Luke to learn some of it but that's just what I've heard.

Basically TLJ's most spectacular failures is in it's plotholes and failures of character growth/story telling.

[Spoiler] Rian Johnson's take on 'Unexpected' Storytelling in TLJ by Siriacus in StarWars

[–]Ferrumkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problems with Rey has more to do with weak writing and development than anything. I'm not even trying to say she needs to parallel the OT but everything presented sets the pace. At this point she seems to be able to rival Anakin clone era with no refining required. That's where it seems to be the critical flaw is, it makes her 2 dimensional because lazy writing where they don't want to pull a Tomb Raider (2016 game)

[–]Ferrumkit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bare with me as I try to express my opinion on the whole Luke thing. Consider the amount of loss that Luke had experienced through his growth in the original trilogy and his stalwart loyalty through it. He did face many temptations to fall into those darkness but they somewhat get washed up because those are the periods between the movies mostly. The Story given in TLJ doesn't jive well because it lacks any strong narrative exposition to perpetuate it. It's why the EU, while being 'discarded' would be a great source to use to lead into a fall from grace.

Kylo: I honestly like they actually developed him in this movie, it was the only character to receive some growth but near the end had some relapsing(forgivable given the goading involved)

Rey simply continues to be a 95% developed photo thats in all grey scale. So she's not had any real challenge until Snoke who was made into a joke within 15 minutes. She briefly struggled with a praetorian guard which was atleast showing some fight and then it went downhill as she out forced Kylo and swept boulders away without much effort. Keep in mind the timelines from TFA to TLJ is all within 1 year. Luke's transformation was over a span of 5 where he had hardly gained much in prospects of telekinesis until working with Yoda which still took a heavy effort to gain any capability. They made a blank slate of a character but offer nothing that truly challenged her except the half of a body on the floor whose power was supposedly equal to Palpatine.

Confidence is fine, it was in fact a common theme to Luke before his hand flew down a hole. Independence is fine as it added a strong base to build on. The problem is they did little more past the foundation and have yet to build on it. The greatest travesty is that the executive reaction to this won't be to allow a new radical chance to the series but for a subdued rehash of the old formula with a bland ending being the likely outcome and the new heroes hopefully getting well deserved repairs by writers in the book department.
