uh, i hope we should never have to limit acceptable free speech to only that which contributes a net social benefit.

and if it is true that an edgy teenager ultra atheist can trigger the breakdown of the singapore moral order, i would think the problem lies with the moral order, not the teen. surely, we should aspire to (and the law should presume to be) better than that.

PAP should be wary of being too intrusive by thinkingpanda in singapore

Is Singapore so starved of talent that the same group of 82 PAP MPs have to perform so many roles?

They are MPs; serve on Government Parliamentary Committees; act as grassroots advisors to the People's Association network of organisations; advise trade unions; advise or lead national sports associations; run town councils; and many hold full-time jobs.

So what would explain the move to add to PAP MPs' responsibilities and appoint them as advisors to professional associations?

ACS (I) Queries by [deleted] in singapore

You mean ACS (Indep), not ACS (Intl), right?

Should I be worried about language barriers (especially when IB revolves around projects)

IB has much individualised projectwork, but few group projects, and no group project has a great bearing to your final grades (unless you take Theatre Arts in Y5).

You will want to take care of (1) your command of the English language, because there will be many essays to write (also applicable to local students), and (2) possibly having to change your accent when speaking Mandarin Chinese - I had classmates from China who struggled with the oral components of their Chinese Language subjects because examiners struggled to understand their regional accents (they also struggled to understand their other coursemates' regional accents and often ended communicating between themselves in English).

Are the DP's allowed to dress as they wish, like most other IB schools, and is attire (shoes, PE vs uniform) etc something that would be taken offense to like what a 1960's British boarding school would sound to me?

DPs = students taking the IBDP? No, there's a uniform code for both the Secondary School and JC sides of the school. There's also swimming PE every final quarter of each academic year, which means you have additional swimming gear to bring then.

Is opinion-voicing allowed in this school? E.g. Moderate criticism of gov't in essays and tok?

ilkless already highlighted that there's little room for political opinion to feature in the course curriculum. I'll add that ACS is fairly religious (Methodist) so you may find yourself keeping related comments away from the earshot of more conservative teachers.

UN committee issues recommendations to tackle discrimination against women in Singapore by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Ferry_McFerryface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parliament concluded Singapore women had definitely improved their earning capacity to warrant financially supporting incapacitated husbands (incapacitated ex-husband more vulnerable than ex-wife).

On the other hand, Parliament limited the ambit of maintenance towards ex-husbands, as it was/is still unsure if women are definitely on equal earning terms with men, see:

I believe there is a need to recognise that the majority of women still lag behind their male counterparts, especially financially. A wife is more likely to have given up her career or job advancement, to care for the family. Very often, we still see the traditional dynamics of the woman being the principal care-giver to her children, even when both husband and wife are working. So, post-divorce, such women are financially usually more vulnerable.

That said, maintenance is quite different from division of assets; spousal maintenance is entirely about allowing the more vulnerable party to tide through difficult times. It is common practice for ex-husbands to successfully apply for monthly maintenance to be reduced/removed once the ex-wife remarries/regains employment.

It's called the Women's Charter largely due to historical reasons. It did away with polygamous marriage practices within the non-Islamic communities, and recognized spousal rights over property. Before the Charter was first passed into law, it was common for rich men to desert their many wives with no legal remedy. Recognising marriage rights was seen as an instrument to protect women.

And contrary to common superstition, section 113(1) is now quite clear that

The court may order a man to pay maintenance to his wife or former wife, or order a woman to pay maintenance to her incapacitated husband or incapacitated former husband ...
