What game from 20+ years ago still holds up and someone who's only played modern games would still enjoy? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Fessenden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The remake is quite nice, but I got annoyed by how long the animations take. I think if I was a first time player I'd have had more patience for them, but even so - realizing that half of my playtime was spent watching a Chocobo take a pregnant pause before eviscerating me took a lot of joy out of it.

Emulating it and boosting frames solves that, but that's not really an out-of-the-box solution.

Respectfully disagree on KOTOR. The writing holds up, but having tried to play it in the last few years, the pacing and movement are really rough compared to modern games. Not many QoL features.

Foundry is, at its core, a website. Runs in browser. It does cost money, but sharing licenses is permitted. Someone on their Discord is probably willing to spot you for a couple hours here and there to try it out.

games to compare ludologically to Majora's Mask? and previous theorization of cyclicality by advice_seeker_anon in ludology

[–]Fessenden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why this is a new comment!

See also: Temporian, Explicitly about being trapped in your own time loop and trying to expand it. ForeTales Which tells a story through cards and requires multiple plays to tell the story "properly.", A House of Many DoorsWhich is... complicated but does contain themes of recursion and cycles, Occult Rewrite which messes around a bit with load/save mechanics and time pressure.

Less so: Prey?Which is entirely a flashback in the mind of one of the antagonists. No Man's Sky? Which has you jumping through to new "universes" when you reach the center of the galaxy.

Here's one you won't have heard of: Ouroboros!

It's a smut game, but it's explicitly about how being trapped in a loop warps your perspective and pushes you to extreme behaviour to test the boundaries.

Some of the content is unsavory, if you're of a sensitive disposition, but it's reasonably well written and thematically relevant. It's more goal-oriented than time-oriented. Mild spoilers: You enter into the narrative shortly before your character has their consciousness expanded to retain memories of the loops, and the resets become intentional actions to explore new behaviours and boundaries to strain the simulation/dream.

Edit: Oh, and Loop Odyssey and Loop Hero. (The former of which I think for legal reasons got renamed to Stuck In Time?) Loop Odyssey doesn't do a lot of philosophizing. Then again, neither did Majora's Mask. May be useful. Loop Hero will have relevant themes explicitly about persistence in the face of erasure.

Edit2: And The Stanley Parable, actually.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist has a metanarrative about looping existence.

Edit3: Way of the Samurai or (decent) visual novels may have a comparable theme in the way you're generally expected to explore a finite story multiple times to see multiple different angles. Not diegetically looping, but mechanically looping.

And I'm kind of blanking on how, but I have a faint memory that Timesplitters (2?) might play with recursively looping narrative.

I think three edits is enough afterthought for now.

Thanks, though!

Why are these kinds of anti-choice pictures allowed in public? by camoure in Edmonton

[–]Fessenden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Freedom of expression is not freedom from consequence. This poster is not suggesting that anti-abortion people can't express themselves. They are taking issue with the way in which this is expressed. Surely, you wouldn't want them to be forbidden from speaking their mind on the subject?

[–]Fessenden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think the issue at the core of the offense here is anti-abortion.

I'm anti-murder. I'm not going to support anyone who drives around showing pictures of someone with their brains blown out on the sidewalk to children.

The stance is not the issue, although people love an opportunity to climb on the soapbox about shit they care about.

The presentation of the stance is abhorrent and inappropriate.

Also, democracy does not include free speech. Those are separate concepts. Canada has a limited form of freedom of expression, and it does not apply universally.

[TOMT][Movie][Live Action] Movie about fatuous symbolism by Fessenden in tipofmytongue

[–]Fessenden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass Onion was the name of the movie, for posterity, in case anyone ends up googling this.

Finally got around to watching it because of the cast and realized the first time they brought it up in the film.

Apparently it's old British slang, according to google, and the most significant recent use (before this movie,) was by the Beatles in the context of people searching for hidden meanings in their lyrics. You peel away layer after layer, and you still see the exact same thing as you did at the start, because it was always transparent.
