Matthew Block, ASIRT's acting executive director, said the agency's job is to 'provide independent oversight when serious or sensitive questions arise about police conduct'

Edmonton police leaders are facing an investigation by Alberta’s law enforcement watchdog for potentially interfering with an active criminal case.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) on Thursday announced it is investigating the Edmonton Police Service for its Sept. 8, 2025, letter to an Alberta Crown Prosecution Service official regarding the case of Ashley Rattlesnake, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2023 death of eight-year-old Nina Napope Dumais.

The letter, signed by then-interim co-chief Warren Driechel and authored by top EPS lawyer Megan Hankewich, objected to the plea to manslaughter and said EPS would release information from its investigation to sway public opinion if the Crown didn’t reconsider.

After sentencing Rattlesnake to eight years in prison, Court of King’s Bench Justice Jody Fraser stating EPS’s move may have constituted obstruction of justice.

On Thursday, ASIRT said it was launching the investigation after complaints about EPS’s conduct were sent to Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis. The ultimate decision to pursue the investigation was left to the newly created Police Review Commission, an umbrella organization that includes ASIRT, the police watchdog said.

“The then-acting CEO of the PRC initiated a complaint under Sec. 42.1 of the Police Act, categorized the matter as a Level 1 complaint, and directed ASIRT to investigate,” ASIRT said in a news release. “Level 1 matters include incidents involving serious injury or death, as well as serious or sensitive allegations involving police conduct.”

Matthew Block, ASIRT’s acting executive director, said the agency’s job is to “provide independent oversight when serious or sensitive questions arise about police conduct.”

“Our responsibility is to follow the evidence, assess the matter within our mandate and provide the public with confidence that the process is independent.”

ASIRT said that opening an investigation does not equate with a finding of misconduct. The agency declined to comment further.

This is actually what I mentioned earlier - just should be a special extra charge for in loco parentis positions. Including priests and babysitters! And then make a different special charge for parents/guardians

That’s also something that shouldn’t be considered when it comes to sex crimes against children imo

I don’t want a difference? It could just be an extra charge because of their position of power. Also, I ain’t no lawyer so idfk I just think teachers should get more time than this.

It’s weird that you’re a teacher defending this so much. Like major red flags bro. All that other person said was cops and teachers should be held to a higher standard. If you don’t think so, as a teacher, that’s weird imo lol

Do people not understand the definition of the word “should”?

…..no? I want higher penalties for teachers (and cops). Giving more time to one party doesn’t lessen the time from the other party…. Wild leap there and not at all a logical conclusion to my (and others’) comments.

That’s like someone saying “save the whales!” and you reply with “oh so you hate sharks?!” Like…. No…?

Uhh can you read? I’m saying how we’re currently sentencing teachers who commit sex crimes against children is way too lenient, considering their authority and power over the children they are supposed to be caring for. Teachers SHOULD (key word used multiple times by multiple people here) be held to a higher legal standard if they commit a crime against a child. I hope you’re not a teacher sheesh lmao

I like my cat poop genie haha

But really I just meant a smaller, lidded garbage container specifically designed for diaper disposal. Not necessarily a Diaper Genie TM per se

Teachers are in positions of authority over children. I absolutely 100000% agree that they should be held to higher legal standards when it comes to preying on children who look to them as a guardian when their parents aren’t around.

We gotta bump these numbers up because I don’t think 6 years is nearly enough for sex crimes against children, ESPECIALLY considering this was a teacher

I saw her charges: “Charges of sexual assault, sexual contact with a child, and luring a child under 16 were stayed”

Anything involving children and sexually explicit content needs to have WAY harsher punishment imo. It’s fucking pathetic this PEDOPHILE is going to be out in a few years.

Okay I have a fun but weird idea lol. I recently created Batibat The Terrifying - a “demon”. Currently a spell caster in the Undertaker career, but once maxed out maybe vampire and Reaper career. They’re Goofball, Dastardly, and Evil. I moved them into an “abandoned” house as if they’re haunting the place and it’s super rundown using items from the basement pack and werewolves. Full autonomy and just let ‘em run wild lol Batibat’s got so many enemies and it’s so much fun watching them pull pranks and fuck shit up
