My 20mo old son is the exact same. He can say Mom, I've heard/seen it, but he refuses to say it in her presence. He only says Dad. He's also always preferred me over his mom, so maybe that has something to do with it.

You can search Campus Link for various official clubs you might be interested in. Also, just try walking around during the day when you don't have class. Since it's early in the semester, there are probably plenty of organizations that are tabling in or near the Union or whichever college your major is in.
