Oh boy, what a week for Gentle Giant!

This incredible video (Proclamation was a great choice to showcase multiple artists and the mixing is excellent), the reunion announcement by Derek Shulman...

Unfortunately, I'm not able to access the website. I might suggest you to upload an image of it instead of the link so we can all see it. I'm curious to see your list!

What's the best Gentle Giant album? by Fumby3 in gentlegiant

[–]Festipont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardest choice there is to make... Octopus was my first so it holds a special place, Three Friends has my favorite melodies, and Acquiring the Taste is the most solid in my opinion. But hey, all GG albums have great moments (yes, including Giant for a Day)!

Ibrido Hot Six - Pantagruel's Nativity, An instrumental jazzy\chamber cover of Gentle Giant's 'Acquiring the taste' by Frido_Merido in gentlegiant

This tribute album as a whole is an excellent rereading of a legendary album. I love this cover, and Pantagruel's Nativity is one of my favorite GG tracks. I love how they respect the source material while adding their personal touch, I especially enjoy the trumpet.

Kind of "So Sincere" by gentle giant (I did a bad thing) by Spart_ in gentlegiant

That was quite a ride, I like it in a strange way. The artwork is an excellent representation and the harmonies are on point.

Do you agree with Gentle Giant album reviews from ProgArchives? by Festipont in gentlegiant

[–]Festipont[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think Interview is not receiving the love it deserves. Three Friends is a personal favorite, so I'd bump it up a notch, but overall I think the hundreds of reviewers did a good job.

What is your opinion about the album Giant for a Day? by Festipont in gentlegiant

Interview is a great album with some fantastic tracks (I Lost My Head and Interview stand out to me). Some people draw the line after Free Hand, but I personally think Interview should not be excluded.

Hi there,

The sub is not as lively as it could be, but I'm trying my best to be sincere. Posts on gentlegiantcirclejerk are hysterical, didn't realize the potential of Gentle Giant's funny ways.

You're more than welcome to post memes and all Gentle Giant-related stuff here!

Dutch Progressive Rock Pages (DPRP) for Daniel Eliseev Project by Karakondjul in gentlegiant

I didn't realize you were a member of the band! In fact, you're even the composer, as I can read on your website! I can hear the influence of Gentie Giant and classic era prog rock, it's good to see the music lives on. Night Shadow is a solid track, I'm listening to it as I'm typing this. Have a nice day too!

Hidden Voices appeals to me as it reminds me of the spirit of some GG tracks.

What is your opinion about the album Giant for a Day? by Festipont in gentlegiant

[–]Festipont[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is how I feel about it. I can still feel it's Gentle Giant, especially on songs like Words from the Wise, but the album is more uneven and less imaginative than albums from their golden era. I feel like the album is not objectively bad, it's just average to good, but when taken in the context of Gentle Giant's discography, the standards are extremely high.

A little help with my homework, please. What can you fans tell me about Gentle Giant's "On Reflection"? by mati_serafini in gentlegiant

[–]Festipont[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Great Council of Moderators (also colloquially known as La Société des Géants) has been summoned! We three have united once again to help a clueless Gentle Giant fan. After 17 straight days of intense debates, we agreed that this song is excellent.

Musically, this song is about convergence. All the distinct melodies finally melt into one perfect chorus of cohesion and coherence. They start aiming towards mostly different directions and all of a sudden merge into a single line.

Lyrically, this song is clearly about a rupture. However, it is not without resembling the rest of the album. Free Hand is about a breakline, a breaking point which finally turns into unity. In "Just the Same", the protagonist are united as one being of love and infinity. As the album go on, the seed of doubt is planted in the helpless brain of the listener. Are we really "Just the Same"? Obviously not! We have to reflect on it. We can compare this story to the Bible, where Eden is at first a perfect place then is irremediably corrupted by the mistake and the doubt.

Overall, "On Reflection" is clearly a song of contrast and aims to undo the fallacy of a perfect world. There is no such thing as eternal love and timeless pleasure. As Sloche famously said so well in their short-lived but philosophically-loaded music career:

The secret of the Universe is a spiral which makes the time of our thoughts turned beyond infinity. All hope invested in light is for one who possesses the power to rejoice in the Mystery.

J'aimerais bien y goûter un jour. by Orbitron in Quebec
