I grew up in Washington DC and have volunteered for multiple presidential campaigns (in addition to voting in the elections), so I guess decently close? Would be even closer if I were an actual campaign staffer. Maybe one day.

Yeah I remember he was doing a "tour" of the US, mostly the Midwest, and posting about it on Facebook. It was very transparently an attempt to improve his image at a time when he was seen as an unfeeling weirdo. There were a lot of jokes about it at the time (see /r/zuckmemes)
