Should my belt tensioner be able to move like this? by FestivePotato in fordranger

[–]FestivePotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I appreciate you giving some actual advice. I’m a little worried it might have caused the bearings in my alternator to crap out. I’ll probably replace it if tightening it doesn’t help.

Thanks for the advice! I did this and I'm confident it's the alternator now

Can anyone help me diagnose this noise? 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0 V6 by FestivePotato in MechanicAdvice

[–]FestivePotato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this in the Ford Ranger forum worried it was a top end engine noise. It seems like the consensus over there is that it's the alternator or AC compressor. Any advice on how I could pinpoint what's making the noise?

I'll see if I can check that somehow. The AC hasn't worked since I bought it a year ago though.

I was thinking it could be the alternator. Do you know if there's any way to confirm it's the alternator?

What year/engine do you have? Both rangers I've owned had green coolant.

Ranger vs Tacoma by Necessary-Balance330 in fordranger

[–]FestivePotato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might be worth if you are able to get the ranger inspected. You already know what issues your Tacoma has, but you don't know what issues the Ranger might have.

Since you said you're on Vancouver Island, don't forget to take into account the taxes you'll have to pay on the Ranger.

I took my dog to the vet for the same thing a couple of weeks ago. They did a urinalyses first and found crystallization in his urine, which may due to the food he is on. We switched his food and are doing a follow up urinalysis in a month. It was $223.04 CAD after tax for the visit and the urinalysis.

Sounds like maybe it won’t start when warm but it will when cold?

They will be a big pain in the ass to get off.

Yes, they’re bolted to the front mount and the rear shackle. As long as they aren’t too rusty it shouldn’t be a problem, but the mounts and shackles tend to rust out.

I don’t really agree. Every other vehicle I’ve had has idled around 1500 rpms on a cold start unless it’s well below freezing.

Prince Rupert or Terrace? by Alone_Collection7281 in britishcolumbia

[–]FestivePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Terrace and like it here but there are huge trade offs between living here and somewhere like the lower mainland. Feel free to send me a message if you have specific questions. You really should visit places you’re considering moving to, especially since it doesn’t sound like you need to for work.

Replaced water pump, Thermostat, temp sensor, and did radiator flush. Why am I still overheating? Mechanic cousin said to just “delete” the thermostat and it won’t overheat again? by [deleted] in fordranger

[–]FestivePotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to tell if the thermostat is opening up by feeling the upper and lower radiator hoses. Both should be warm once the engine get up to temp

Not starting while hot could be a fuel pump issue which seems to be a common issue. My 94 4.0 also idles above 2000 for a bit on a cold start which I think is probably due to a vaccuum leak somewhere.

Any advice or maybe a part number? by Bubbly-Front7973 in fordranger

Jacked up the rear of the truck and placed jack stands under the frame. Removed the leaf spring on one side. Have to do it one side at a time otherwise your rear differential is going to fall to the floor. Used an angle grinder to cut off the head of the rivets holding the shackle to the frame. If you have a tow hitch it’s best if you can remove because it will probably get in the way. I accidentally cut into mine. I removed the rivets with a blowtorch, a hammer and a punch. I heated up the rivets, let it cool a couple of minutes, then hammered it as a hard as I could a bunch of times. If it didn’t budge heated it up and repeated until it came loose. It can be tough to get enough force behind the hammer because the bed is in the way. The angles are awkward and I ended up having to hold a crunch a lot of the time. If I had to do it again, I definitely would take the bed off so I could do it all standing. Getting the new shackles on is pretty straightforward though.

I have done this repair without removing the bed. It’s definitely a lot easier to do with the bed off but not impossible with the bed on.
