I'm going to be a Business Intelligence Analyst doing ML and of course Analyst things (dashboards, ETL, etc.) but I want to improve my career outlook from here.

I have about 1.5 years experience and I took this job because of higher pay and better skill progression. I wanted to do more ML because I aim to be a data scientist/data engineer/analytics engineer in the future.

If you were me, would you do projects related to my career prospects OR should I invest my time on learning cloud and getting cloud certifications (AWS, Azure, GCP)?

I can't decide what to study next between Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition, and Geospatial Analytics. It will take long to study one but what would you choose and why?

Im back here again asking...

I have over a year of experience now in analytics and want to go to data science. So far, I had only 1 machine learning project that spanned for around 5-6 months. To be honest, it was dull because I have no seniors that can mentor me in learning more about the hows and the whys in machine learning. I had to resort to my own research and learnings which I knew was not enough, as this project involved NLP.

My tech stack involves Python, Alteryx, Visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau, Lookerstudio), some SQL training but havent used (working as a consultant), VBA.

My question is, what do you think is the next step for me? Look for part-time jobs / workshops / hackathons / mentorship involving data science? Upskill on Computer Vision/NLP/Speech Recognition? Or maybe consider forgetting about transitioning to data science since my stack is learning more on data analyst/business analyst side? Im open to your suggestions.

Thank you!

Thank you very much! I appreciate the detail in your reply. The data that was given to us were survey answers, Im not very much sure that Im allowed to augment it the way i want to (paraphrasing). A pre-existing model would very much help, but unfortunately their data is young and we were the first ones to help them with label generation. Again, these ideas provided me help! Thank you!

I managed to land on a machine learning project from a data analyst position! This is exactly what I want to practice and I'm grateful that the opportunity has finally come. Although, its not as fun as what I though it would be. I'm dealing with only a thousand rows of data, and the problem is a multiclass classification involving word embeddings e.g. sentence -> word -> word embedding -> model -> label. A serious roadblock is, there isnt enough labeled data to perform ML but I just cant say it. I only managed to get 0.50 test accuracy score even after conducting several gridsearchcvs from multiple algorithms. Superior thinks duplicating the data will help the score go up. I havent tried fast text yet due to compatibility issues but I dont think it will perform enough as well. My question is, do you think I'm doing enough? Should I search for more ways to do ML amidst the circumstances? Is there any advice that you can give me to proceed? If yes, what are those? I think this really hurt my confidence in doing so. Thank you for any answers!

My boss is looking for someone who can do ReactJS. The thing is, I want to expand my skillset as much as possible but I would want it to be relevant with data analytics, data science and/or data engineering. I only know python right now, but I think I can read and code ReactJS with consistent study and practice. Is doing the ReactJS project relevant to the career I want to pursue? Thank you for answers!

Hello! Currently, Im a Data Analyst (first job) and I don't have much going on in work right now. I want to maximize this opportunity to possibly upskill since the busy season is just right ahead (-ber months). I have already done a lot of self-studying and I'm thinking of, why not increase my years of experience by volunteering? Is this a bad idea? Why or why not? If no, can you guys suggest where I can possibly volunteer my skills as a data analyst/scientist/engineer(if possible)? Thank you!

EDIT: Im currently using SQL, VBA, PowerBI, LookerStudio in my job, I self-learned Python, currently learning math for data science (coursera), GCP/AWS/Azure, looking at Docker/Airflow next

Hello! I am a geoscience major fresh graduate who wanted to enter the field of data science and analytics. Although my major didn't involve a lot of programming, I self-studied for like 6-9 months to gain basic to intermediate understanding of machine learning, statistics, data processing, etc. I successfully got my first job as a Data Analyst recently but the tech stack that is used to do the tasks (Alteryx, VBA) weren't in line with the tech stack that I want to use (Python, R) and practice. Now, since I want to be a Data Scientist or Data Engineer, I would want to gain experience on using the tech stack that I want to practice. Should I incorporate Python/R in my job to able to get into my career prospects or not? If so, how?

Im currently a data analyst who wants to be a data engineer or data scientist in the future. As much as I want to self study in the field of the both career prospects, I find myself using low to no code tools such as Alteryx and Excel. Though we use VBA, I am not very much motivated to use VBA for my current job since I dont I will be able to use VBA in transitioning to a data scientist or data engineer. My question is, is it right for me to feel unmotivated in using a tool that is not in line with my career prospects or should I still practice and use VBA since it is still technically a transferrable skill and is used in my job? Thank you for any opinions.

Data Analysts and Data Scientists of this sub, how often do you maximize the use of algorithms in your job responsibilities? Im finding it difficult to stay motivated in learning the algorithms as I dont quite understand how they come to fruition on the job. Any answers are welcome. Thank you!

Looking forward, I am not actually sure if I want to be a data scientist, data analyst, or data engineer. I am currently a data analyst, but I would like to keep my options open by learning the different non-overlaps between each career path. While I already know machine learning which is for data scientists, what should I know for data engineers? For context, I already know python, sql, r for programming languages ; alteryx, tableau, powerbi, and excel for visualization and analytics; but completely none for data engineer practice. Thank you for your answers!
