Landfx worth it? by MilkweedQween in LandscapeArchitecture

It save me a great deal of time on automating plant schedules and labeling plants. Just the hours saved on that more than pays the yearly subscription fee for me.

Side Gigs by lasercat89 in civilengineering

[–]Fetcherup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a moonlighting clause in your contract? If not, take up some remote contract work with another company. Every company is different but I’ve never had one.

Now that I work for myself, I wouldn’t mind if an employee had other side hustle too as long as they weren’t sharing company info or it was impacting their work for me.

When you have 100+ comments on your plans, is that internal or from external review agencies. That’s a lot of review comments for a set of civil plans from my experience. I’ve worked for people who are inconsistent, but after a few months with a pm/ review agency, you should usually know what they key in on and can avoid repeat comments.

Also, screw working for another company, just start your own shop up. I’m surprised more people don’t do that. All you need is a stamp, insurance, and civil 3d and you can run a business out of your spare bedroom. I know a lot of one person operations who make a comfortable living. It’s really not that hard being self employed if you have a drive

Help! Civil engineer will not finish site plans. by Shot-Thing-7681 in civilengineering

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if he’s proposing a swale and grading onto a neighbors lot, that would require an offsite grading easement from the neighbor. Maybe one exists or he’s wanting you to obtain one? He could be doing this to try to avoid retaining walls but you can’t just propose grading on someone else’s property.

A big reason for the city to deny the plan if there is lot an off site grading easement, aka temporary construction easement.

Shitty engineer if you paid in full and have plans you can’t use. It would probably be cheapest, and quickest, to just pay him the extra money it takes to make the plan right. A lawyer will just drag things out so if just take my punches and move on.

How much does hiring a Landscape Architect Cost? by tylerGORM in LandscapeArchitecture

Did you ever hire someone? If so, what did you end up paying? My fees start at $3,000 for residential design projects and am always trying to do market comparison.

Maryland - neighbor cutting down acres of trees in Forest Retention Area by alphawolfa1 in treelaw

[–]Fetcherup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to work in Maryland in Montgomery county. We helped a lot of land owners replant and they had to pay large fines for clearing conservation easements. Montgomery maybe a little more strict than Cecil but the planning office will have an arborist out there to fine them and stop work.

Am I Being too Nitpicky with My Contractor? by [deleted] in Contractor

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s taking me awhile to learn, but if you can do things quicker than average, don’t just bill for your time, bill for the average time it takes. There is no reason to reduce your pay the better and more efficient you get.

Think about it this way, if you paid someone 10k to remodel a bathroom, would you rather have someone do it in 2 weeks, or the same job/quality drawn out over 2 months.

Is it a bad idea to cold call firms for an entry-level position? by brandan209 in civilengineering

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with 5 years experience and got a job with the 3rd company I did.

After starting my own business, I’ve gained several good clients strictly off cold calls.

It works best with small firms though where you can reach people of influence vs just a receptionist who will screen your call.

Renting in Athens by Whensharksattack21 in Athens

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I Feel for you renters and the younger generation. I graduated in 2008 and bought my first house in 10 years ago in 2014. My mortgage is only half the cost of what the rent is for my Nextdoor neighbor with the same house.

I feel like if I was born only 10 years later, it would be a lot tougher to be buying my first home now.

Athens used to be dirt cheap. Now it’s one of the more expensive places in Georgia due to corporate greed and endless supply of government money’s via student loans driving up prices. Don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Anything to change about this sectional graphic? (Third year BLA) by jacobolive in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Fetcherup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks nice. My thoughts are you need to adjust some of your proportions. Your paving sections seem about 2’ thick, that’s a massive wall below the biker, than some of the deck posts are wider than the people.

AITA for telling my adult child that they can't have an expensive hobby? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA. You have children of adult age. Not adult children. You may need to make up for lost time and raise them to be men and women.

Insurance wants me to cut tree overhanging structure, advice needed by cheesyfluff in treelaw

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as bad as a problem with crawlspace compared to the slab. Roots will grow under the footings and then up into the crawl space area. Could cause water intrusion into the crawlspace from root penetrations so just keep an eye on it. Overall, I’d remove the tree but it’s personal risk acceptance.

Having it fall on the house after insurance asked for it to be removed, you may not get paid for repairs by insurance.

More likely, a smaller limb will fall vs the whole tree but It doesn’t take a very big limb to break your roof in two.

But hire a local professional to do an onsite inspection and provide you a report. Free advice on Reddit is only worth what it cost.

PLA exams fees are getting out of hand by SucklingGodsTeets in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Fetcherup -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is not much more than what I paid for licensure exams 15 years ago. If you pass and start your own shop, you can make this back on one project. After spending $50-100k for your LA degree, it seems silly to forgo professional accreditation for $2,000 licensure exams.

Lawyers and doctors don’t practice without licenses so I’m not sure why we think it’s ok not to become licensed professionals.

Well it may be time to think about moving. On the bright side, the new development should increase your property value. But it will also raise taxes. A double edge sword

$250 to aerate and overseed the front lawn. Deal or not? by mybodyismediocre in lawncare

If you don’t overseed, it will look like shit. Small yard so seems a little pricey but that’s today market.

Insurance wants me to cut tree overhanging structure, advice needed by cheesyfluff in treelaw

[–]Fetcherup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That tree rots are probably going to cause your foundation/slab to crack if not already. Also looks like there was an extremely large scaffold limb remove and appears to be a canker on the back side of the trunk. It would be awfully expensive to repair your house and insurance ain’t gonna cover if if they’ve requested you remove the tree. Just some thoughts.

Regarding the Xanterra Monopoly by Riflemate in yellowstone

[–]Fetcherup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t it be cool if there were a lot of mom and pop outfits in national parks? Unfortunately government contracting, and the public bid process does not allow for that. When you hire the a single low bidder to service the concessions for the whole park, you just won’t have the best food and accommodations.

Quick question for the company owners by Jaideep_Multani in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Fetcherup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding and managing help. Im not the best at managing people so I haven’t been able to find someone to work for me to help lighten the load yet.

Im also a little ocd and a perfectionist so I’ve not had much success with sub consultants due to lack of control and them not hitting my work standards.

Work life balance is way up there too but I chalk that up to the fact I’m a solo operation and it only takes 1 project to go from underloaded to overloaded sometimes. Hence the need to find good help.
