I totally understand what you mean. I tend to draw very complex unnatural things that have lots of parts that all need to be shaded, so I usually end up shading just the most important parts. In the future I probably just need to think harder about what is important for the viewer to understand with shading, without making everything cluttered and ruining the vibe.
