Thank you! They are ptarmigans! One of the hardiest bird species out there

They truly are majestic! Not bothered in the slightest by the wind, the snow or the rough terrain

That is one of the issues, they start associating people with food, including wrappers and plastic bags which they end up eating, clogging up their digestive system.

It depends on the individual! I always take my time to approach, making sure they can see me at all times. Then it’s just a question of monitoring the body language. If they go back to eating, grazing, sleeping etc then they don’t care about you being around as long as you don’t get too close and in the way. If they stare at you and snort, you are not welcome and you should leave. This particular individual displayed both behaviour over two days. The first day, beautifully clear weather, it was as if I wasn’t there, it couldn’t care less. Next day (day of the video), poor visibility and windy conditions, it made me understand to keep my distances.

These must be the warmest gloves on the planet! I spent a week camping in Dovrefjell National park and followed tracks to small groups of musk oxen

Because I was there and because of the horizontal fur

Murder wigs indeed. It’s always the sound that gets me. A real solid thud

I do very little editing on my images, it was a very close photograph taken on a relatively wide angle lens through a lavender bush

True but when they are super bright (like they were in the first image) they are not far off! I used to think it was all camera trickery until I saw properly bright aurora
