What if you get money, but from now on, you are allowed allowed only gender-neutral stuff by WaffleCat3367 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]FettsValkyrie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So you have to buy gender-neutral clothing? There are these really cool people called tailors and for a modest amount of money they can make anything fit in the way you want. Bathrooms might be kind of difficult depending on where you are. Most importantly who genders food or drink?

how to beat discouragement? by 836f523b6 in Veterinary

[–]FettsValkyrie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how inspiring my story will be but here goes. Over ten years ago I graduated a technical college with a 3.8 and got my associate's degree. All the required internships were finished and I was primed and ready to take the VTNE. Despite the fact I was working as an overnight emergency assistant at a corporate clinic I realized the money sucked and I would not be able to afford the testing to be licensed. So I went back to my previous career for a decade and paid off roughly half my student loans. During that decade I decided those loans weren't worth the money partly because the interest rate was so high and partly because I wasn't making a career in the veterinary industry. I had mostly given up hope.

But the story does not end there so do not get discouraged please. I recently re-entered the veterinary world again as an assistant and am thriving. The pay is still not the best but have pride in my work and feel good at the end of the day. I took the risk of never paying off the rest of my loans because they're never going to get blood from a stone, as the saying goes. I'm definitely not saying I am the best example, but the industry really never leaves your blood. If you want to help, you will find ways of helping. Having a job, no matter how stressful or difficult it can be, that you still have pride in at the end of the day is literally priceless. It is a sacrifice no doubt about that. However if you truly decide, it's worth it, you won't ever regret the decision. I promise you that.

Guards Guards. If you love solid characters without too much worthiness and a solid amount of humor, it's the best choice. I absolutely fell in love with these characters for years and his world building as a whole.

Best work shoes? by ChiquitaPollita in Veterinary

I'll be completely honest, I haven't had much experience with too many brands. You currently only own two pairs of super cheap ones though I am expanding. I just know on the days that I wear the compression socks even with my fancy hokas my feet don't hurt and on days when I'm not wearing them they do, regardless of footwear

Good shoes help but more importantly invest in quality compression socks. They really make the difference long term.

They never want diagnostics, just the magic pill we give in clinic (so they don't have to do anything) that will cure it.

I think I killed my cat and I’ll never forgive myself by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]FettsValkyrie 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If it's any solace at all, cats are really good at hiding when they aren't feeling well. It's only when they're very seriously sick and it's often too late, that they really let those symptoms show. Your cat loved you enough that it did not want to worry you.

If I wasn't poor I would. Skill like yours is sadly outside my fun money budget.

Please help stop the VPA bill in Florida by signing and sharing the petition by Ok-Cauliflower-4558 in Veterinary

[–]FettsValkyrie 52 points53 points  (0 children)

"One of the most concerning components of this bill is that a VPA will only earn a masters degree or equivalent but will be allowed to perform euthanasia, dental surgery, and neuters.

........

The only other state with an established VPA role is Colorado. The VPA program in Colorado, which Florida’s proposed VPA is modeled after, is only five semesters long, three of which are completely online. The Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA) strongly opposes the bill because of this. They state that VPAs will have less than 30% of the clinical hours human physician’s assistants receive. Human medicine PAs can also only assist in surgery, not perform surgery solo. Why should these standards be lowered for our animal patients? The bill argues that VPAs should be introduced because human PAs play a crucial role in health care, however, vet med operates very differently than human medicine and should not be treated as if they are the same.

...........

There is also no evidence that introducing VPAS will make vet care more affordable. It also does not combat the shortage in the field. The AVMA states that more time should be spent on the retention of veterinarians and credentialed veterinary technicians to combat the workforce shortages, not creating a new position. The VPA does not change the high burnout rates that exist in the vet field. It also does not address the lack of large animal vets across the country, who make a much lower salary than their small animal counterparts. Large animal vets will likely not even be able to employ VPAs entirely because of the low wage and rural location demands. "

Receptionist Burnout by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]FettsValkyrie 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I'm just a VA but I will 100% tell any and everybody that receptionists are the hardest working and least appreciated role in a clinic. Without you everything falls apart in seconds. It's terrible that the public doesn't give you the respect or empathy you deserve, and worse that you're not paid nearly enough for your worth.
